"Schrage Musik" ("Slanted Music, or "Jazz") is the term used for a gun configuration used in Luftwaffe night fighters in the Second World War.
In fact, the greatest danger to a fighter using Schrage Musik was often getting out of the way of the stricken target as it fell to earth!
The Schrage Musik in the He219 were usually two MK108 30 mm cannon with 100 rpg angled upwards at 65 degrees.

This is a Ju 88G-6 with liquid-cooled Jumo 213 engines, Lichtenstein SN radar, and two Schräge Musik MG 151/20 cannon installed in the aft fuselage.
There was more to Schräge Musik than just fitting a few angled-up cannon, usually MG 151/20 or MK 108.
These were put in the rear of the cockpit of the Bf 110, in the aft fuselage of the He 219, and behind the cockpit of the Ju 88 and Do 217.

Installation in Bf 110s, Ju 88s and Do 217s of 'schrage musik' allowed night fighters to attack from directly beneath the bombers without having to execute the intricate maneuvers described above.
The two MG FFs or MG 151/20s 20mm cannons mounted in the cabin or fuselage at a 70 -80 angle were aimed by a second Revi C.12/D or 16B gun sight mounted on the canopy roof.
'Schrage musik' proved to be lethal and took a fearsome toll of heavy bombers in the night battles of 1944 - 45.

In the Schräge Musik tactic, the nightfighters carried specially equipped 20mm cannon almost upright in the fuselage or rear cockpit of the planes.
Schrage Musik was very successful and in the case of the Lancaster and Halifax, they didnt have belly turrets to spot bombers.
With the schräge musik you do just the latter mentioned, without having to pull up (bounce) under the bomber to aim your guns at it......so it is even more practical then a normal fighter.

‘Schrage Musik’ proved to be lethal and took a fearsome toll of heavy bombers in the night battles.
P138: The Schrage Musik cannon fired a lethal mixture of armour-piercing, explosive and incendiary ammunition, and a split-second burst, a single pressure of the thumb on the fire button, was usually sufficient to set the wing ablaze and damage the Stirling, Lancaster, or Halifax beyond hope of recovery.
Schrage Musik came into its own with devastating effect during the second half of 1943 and the first half of 1944.

In the Ronald Remp's book I came across of a note that the "Schrage Musik" was deleted by the airfield crew because they had structural problems in the rear fuselage (cracks in the fuselage ribs caused by the heavy recoil).
It was a good indication that "Schrage Musik" was installed, so I would have to add the upward gun-sight on my model.

Some aircraft had and additional two 30 mm MK 108 cannon in a schrage Musik (Jazz Music) with 100 rounds per gun.
The scheme was made possible by the amazing fact that British heavy bombers not only had not one gun firing downwards but also not one window from which a formating night-fighter could be seen.
The usual schräge Musik installation in the He 219 comprised two MK 108s each with 100 rounds, fixed aft of the fuselage tanks at an angle of 65°.

As far as I know Schrage Musik was triggered by photo-electric cells and required no gunsight.
An outgrowth of the Schräge Musik concept was the development of a number of vertically firing Sondergeräte, a term which can be translated as "special devices".
On the other hand, the Schrage Muzik was successfully employed by night-fighters, so obviouly a photoelectric triggering mechanism would not work at night.

Unescorted bomber formations could be devastated, but once fighters became involved, the 110s were in a lot of trouble.
The "Schrage Musik" (Jazz Music) adaption on the 110 was a set of cannons placed on an angle on top of the 110.
It was used most effectively against Lancaster bombers that did not had a MG port to fire at that angle.

Long bursts also weakened the airframe at the nearest structural point/bulkhead to the gun, which is why the early, twin 20mm "Schrage Musik" equipped Heinkel 219's were prone to break in half just behind the cockpit if landed heavily.
The 219 was a safer aircraft (and just as deadly as a nightfighter) without the "Schrage Musik" most of the first series of He 219 had it removed fairly quickly, the second series were never fitted for or with it.

One sneaky thing the German Night Fighter had though was the Schrage Musik fitting.
German for Jazz Music (don't ask me where the name came from) this fitting consisted of a number of cannons, usually around 20mm, and numbering on average four weapons, on the fuselage of the night fighter angled up at about 45 degrees.
I think it was because Schrage means slanted (Schrage Musik was Jazz) and the guns were like:

In September, 1943, SN-2 radar was introduced, operating on a frequency that was not jammed by "window." At the same time, Major Rudolf Shoenert was able to demonstrate the effectiveness of lighter-color night fighter camouflage, which broke up the fighter's shape in moonlight rather than emphasizing its silhouette as the earlier all-fl camouflage did.
Shoenert was also the first to effectively use "Schrage Musik" - two 20mm MG-FF cannon mounted in the rear of the Bf-110s cockpit, firing upward at an angle of 70-80 degrees.
Since none of the British bombers had a lower turret, Schrage Musik made it possible for a night fighter to formate unseen below a bomber, firing up into it.
