When you watch a Schuhplattler being performed, the reason for its name becomes obvious - you will see men slapping their shoes.
Not to be outdone by the men, the women supply the other highly recognizable part of a Schuhplattler dance - the spinning.
While the men are busy doing their part, the women can be seen spinning, causing their Dirndl to rise up forming the familiar bell.

"Schuhplattler" is a centuries-old Bavarian dance genre in which the men demonstrate their vigor in a raucous but precise "shoe-slapping" rhythm to folk music, alternating with flirtatious figures danced with the women.
The Schuhplattler style of dance mimics the behavior of the male Auerhahn bird (wood grouse), who courts the female by flapping his wings and kicking up his feet around a circle.
In the same manner, a Schuhplattler keeps his hands raised and, by slapping his feet and Lederhosen, imitates the flapping of the Auerhahn's wings.

Schuhplattler und Gebirgstrachten Verein "Washingtonia" was founded in 1923 by several friends who emigrated to the Washington, D.C. area from Bavaria.
Their performance of their native Schuhplattler dances delighted others for whom they danced, and, in time, inspired others to join in the club's activities.
Uniting with several other Schuhplattler groups in the early and mid-1960s we actively engaged in forming the Gauverband Nordamerika, Inc. (an umbrella organization for Bavarian dance clubs in the U.S. and Canada) and provided the organization with its first President and Historian.

Schuhplattling in Cleveland dates back to the early 1920's when four couples joined the German-Austrian singing society "Blau Donau" and became part of their organization, performing folk dances at German Civic functions in and around the city.
During the difficult war years of the 40's, most of the men in the group were in active service and it was up to the women together with the younger couples to keep the group together and active.
It was at this time the Schuhplattler und Bauerngruppe Blaue Donau felt the need to disassociate itself from the parent singing society in order to further its aims in folk dancing.

There were groups of Schuhplattler long before the first Trachtenvereine (organizations which celebrate the traditions and customs of a given area) were established.
The Schuhplattler traveled across the land spreading their way of life through shows and performances.
Through all these travels the Schuhplattler even made their way to the court of the Wittelsbacher (an old Bavarian nobility which still exists.) The dance is, however, regarded as a folk dance in the alpine regions.

Eager to share our group’s newfound Schuhplattler skills with the rest of the Club, we gave our first official performance at the Phoenix Club Oktoberfest in 1971.
On occasion we have been able to visit the Aplentänzer Schuhplattler of Sacramento for their ‘Winterfest’ and ‘Trachtenfeste’ by BGTEV Almenrausch, San Francisco.

                 The Alpen Schuhplattler were officially founded in 1964, when a group of dancers was formed to represent the German culture at the Pittsburgh Folk Festival.
After mastering a few dances, the group also appeared at several affairs in and about the city of Pittsburgh and also established a Kindergruppe.
The present roster of dancers consists of several and even third generation members, a fact which makes them very proud, because it certainly confirms the commitments made by our founding members.
