Schuler tuning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schuler tuning describes the fundamental functional conditions for a gyrocompass.
A simple gravity pendulum, whose length equals the radius of the earth, suspended near an enormous flat plate such that it encounters a uniform gravitational field of the same strength as that experienced by a small pendulum near the earth's surface;
Each of these will have the same period: about 84 minutes -- though the third body only if the density of the earth is assumed constant (in which case its movement is a harmonic oscillation).

 Schuler Homes
In 1923 Schuler published his discovery that if the gyrocompass was tuned to have an 84 minute period of oscillation (the Schuler period) then it would resist errors due to sideways acceleration of the ship or aircraft in which it was installed.
Schuler was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba.
Schuler was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1999 provincial election, defeating New Democrat Leonard Kimakovich by 4969 votes to 4058 in the riding of Springfield (located just east of Winnipeg).

One such technique is Schuler tuning in which values of the spatial velocity of the body and its radius from the centre of the Earth are processed to determine the rate of rotation of the local horizontal plane as the body journeys over the globe.
To this end a vertical reference gyroscope, not Schuler tuned, is employed to retain the vertical reference until the extraneous acceleration is removed and the accelerometers can resume their gravity seeking function.
As the vertical reference gyroscope is not Schuler tuned, and hence does not take account of angular movement about the centre of the Earth, this technique is limited to brief periods of manoeuvre interspersed with periods of steady flight to allow the correct vertical reference to be re-established, if sufficient accuracy is to be maintained.

 The Story of Eighty-Four Minutes
Maximilian Schuler, later a professor of dynamics at Göttingen, developed the gyroscopic ship's compass in the early 1920s and was the first to show that the error due to sideways acceleration of the ship would disappear if the compass could be tuned to a period of 84 minutes.
This then is a case of automatic Schuler tuning, which is just as important to the practical operation of an inertial guidance system on the earth surface (for ships) as the man made Schuler tuning is for the ship's gyroscopic compass.
In case the earth were flat no Schuler tuning effect would exist and the x(t) diagram would be the osculating parabola to the sine curve, shown dotted in the graph.

Pendulum: Encyclopedia II - Pendulum - Applications
As first explained by M. Schuler in his classic 1923 paper, a pendulum whose period exactly equals the orbital period of a hypothetical satellite orbiting just above the surface of the earth (about 84 minutes) will tend to remain pointing at the center of the earth when its support is suddenly displaced.
This is the basic principle of Schuler tuning that must be included in the design of any inertial guidance system that will be operated near...

Among his many accomplishments in teaching and research, he worked on inertial guidance for the Research Institute of National Defense in Stockholm where, together with F. Hector of Philips, he developed a new principle for Schuler tuning of an inertial platform that was successfully flight tested.
During his Ph.D. studies that focused on adaptive control and fault detection, he and Dr. Karl J. Åström developed the relay autotuner for automatic tuning of PID controllers.
Chapter 5 presents new tuning algorithms that are easy to apply in practice and usually result in better control that older methods (like the atrocious Ziegler-Nichols).

But using only these inertial sensors to determine the position by double integration of the gravity-corrected acceleration would not be successful for AUV navigation requirements and would lead to position errors increasing dramatically over time.
Additionally, the well-known procedures of inertial signal processing, such as Schuler tuning or zero velocity update, would not be successful in AUV applications due to the large oscillation of the position error of some nautical miles (nm).
The average position error would be in the area of 0.5nm after 24 hours with the best inertial measuring systems used, for example, on atomic submarines.
