Schwarzenbach died in 1942 from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident, as the entire world made war, and for 50 years her novellas and short stories, her journalistic and photojournalistic reports were forgotten.
Schwarzenbach had no previous experience in documentary photography, but from 1936 to '38, when she lived in Washington, D.C., her style was decisively influenced by the work of the Farm Security Administration.
Schwarzenbach's own photos document her journeys, and voice-overs of a variety of texts give a well-rounded and intimate sense of her writing, always at the center of her life.

Schwarzenbach, from a wealthy family in Zurich, was the more intellectual of the two and at ease with her homosexuality.
A startling aspect of some of the photographs taken in 1939 is that they are remarkably similar to those we see in the press today: a woman covered head to toe in a burqa, a finely woven net at the eyes; bearded men in turbans, stern mountain ranges as a backdrop.
Schwarzenbach, who ended her journey in Afghani Turkestan, wrote numerous articles about her trip for Swiss papers, illustrated with her photos as well as Maillart's.

In the wave of punk-pop bands that followed Green Day and the Offspring to major labels and MTV airplay, Jawbreaker is one of the few to retain their street credibility in the punk community for their unwavering hard work and anti-commercial ethics.
Consisting of guitarist/singer Blake Schwarzenbach, bassist Chris Bauermeister, and drummer Adam Pfahler, Jawbreaker's songs are more downbeat than many of their contemporaries, focusing on depression, loneliness, and relationship problems.
Schwarzenbach and Pfahler met in high school in Santa Monica, found that they shared an admiration for the West Coast SST punk bands, and formed a band called Red Harvest.

Through it all, Schwarzenbach has stood tall as a storyteller in which life's perils have been told as a tale that absolutely gets better later-only now such lessons effortlessly pour out of the man, the weight of it all being courageously held up by his bandmates, while his guitar (or piano) gently weeps.
But these days, Schwarzenbach is all the better for it.

 TrouserPress.com :: Jawbreaker
With its rollercoaster riffs, lurching rhythms and guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach's sore-throat vocals, Unfun offers a rousing alternative to the testosterone-fueled thrash of '80s hardcore, proving that catchy pop-punk could provide the same intensity of feeling and spirit.
The self-abuse Schwarzenbach wreaked with his gravely singing style eventually led to painful throat problems, which accounts for the aggravated hoarseness on Bivouac, recorded in 1992 after the post-graduation trio had settled in San Francisco.
The closest Dear You comes to the old Jawbreaker is the anthemic "Save Your Generation," in which Schwarzenbach admonishes his peers to seize life and stop slacking off: "I have a present: it is the present," he sings.

Perfecting Loneliness closes with "Rocket Boy" an melancholy song that Schwarzenbach describes as being about "a chronic fuck-up, someone in a cycle of failure that's addictive." This is illustrated in lyrics like "Going in a circle, getting lower every time.
In this instance, it seems as though the music itself could possibly be seen as parallel to the pattern of the track's feature character whose life moves in a constant, increasingly destructive circle, until finally reaching it's breaking point.

Blake Schwarzenbach of Jets to Brazil lived in Portland for a while, surviving a few middle-school years at Catlin Gabel, but apparently the Rose City didn't leave much of an impression.

The "all-star cast" of Jets to Brazil is: Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker) on lead vocals, guitars, synth and piano, Jeremy Chatelain (Handsome) on bass and backing vocals, and Chris Daly (Texas is the Reason) on drums.
Schwarzenbach dominates the band, especially on this album, where the other guys are essentially nothing but the background for his music.
Schwarzenbach's massive presence might lead one to expect that Jets to Brazil sounds a lot like his previous act, Jawbreaker, but it is in fact a very different sort of music, either because his new band-mates had some creative input or his old fellows were holding him back from what he really wanted to do.
