The Schynige Platte Railway or Schynige Platte Bahn (SPB) is a mountain railway in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland, which connects the town of Wilderswil, near Interlaken with the famous wildflower gardens of the Schynige Platte.
The Schynige Platte Railway connects with the Berner Oberland Bahn at Wilderswil.
It is a rack railway, using the Riggenbach design to climb 1420 m (4659ft) to its summit with a maximum gradient of 25% (1 in 4).

Although this was the only railway in the region not to meet with opposition from local inhabitants, it was ten years before the project assumed concrete form and a concession was finally granted by the Federal Council.

START - the railway station at Schynige Platte which has a regular train service from Wilderswil, where connections from Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Interlaken are available.
From Schynige Platte railway station head southwest alongside the railway track past the hotel and continue on the Panorama walk as described in walk 005.
Take note that there is one path junction close to First that is not signed where the right hand track offers the most direct route to the end of the walk.

Take the cable railway from Grindelwald to First as early in the morning as possible, both because the hike is quite a long one and you want to catch a train at Schynige Platte by six o'clock at the latest.You can also do the walk the other way round.
As we are travelling home on the train from Schynige Platte to Wilderswil, we may catch a glimpse of the Jungfrau from the train as on this photo.
The Schynige Platte Bahn is a rack railway and connects Schynige Platte to Wilderswil down in the valley, where you can change to a train of BOB, the railway line that runs between Interlaken and both Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.

It connects the BOB Wilderswil station near Interlaken with the wonderful Schynige Platte overlook.
Initially, this railway was powered by steam locos and at a very early stage became property of the BOB; in 1914, along with the BOB it was electrified using 1500 V direct current.
Small electric locos are used exclusively on this line, some of them acquired from the Wengernalp Railway along with some open and closed coaches which are built for coupling to the front of the loco.

Please find four pictures from Wilderswil, on the Berner Oberland Bahn, a one metre gauge line that runs from Interlaken (where my school party was based) to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.
Wilderswil is also the junction for the Schynige Platte Railway.
I’m also shocked to find that despite the journey to Switzerland being entirely by train (with the exception of the Channel ferry), including sleeper across Germany, these are the only four railway pictures that I took.

The railway, founded by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, was actually meant to go to the very top of the Jungfrau, but the trains stop at the ice-bound saddle of the Monch.
The hotel was conveniently located between the railway station and the old historical part of the city (Altstadt), reachable by bridge across the Salzach River.
