Taxonomy and phylogeny of Sciaridae (Diptera) - FMNH
In respect of their taxonomy, Sciaridae is probably the least studied of the large Nematoceran families and which might include 20 000 undescribed species in addition to ca.
In basic taxonomic studies, a great effort is being given to raise the descriptive level of Sciaridae, which is necessary as the species are often morphologically very similar to each other, and generally have proved difficult to identify by non-specialists.

 Sciaridae -- a/o cat.
Sciaridae are common faunal elements in nearly all regions of the world but are poorly known because their small size and superficial homogeneity have not attracted collectors or taxonomists.
Immature stages can be found in rotten wood, under bark of fallen trees, in other kinds of decaying plant material, feeding in fungi or animal excrement or, in Austrosciara termitophila, as inquilines in termite nests.
Skuse (1888b, 1890d) described 61 Sciaridae from Australia, but most of the collections were from New South Wales only.

Small flies are often referred to as a gnat; however; at least two groups of flies, Mycetophillidae and Sciaridae, incorporate the word gnat into the general name for the family.
Both groups can occur in homes or office buildings, and they are usually associated with areas that have potted plants, planters, or maybe aquariums, terrariums, atriums or similar structures within the building.
Insects in the family Sciaridae are very similar to those found in the mycetophillids in size and shape; however, the eyes will meet to form an
