Citation index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A citation index is an index of citations between publications, allowing the user to easily establish which documents cite which other documents.
While citation indexes were originally designed for information retrieval purposes, they are increasingly used for bibliometrics and other studies involving research evaluation.
The use of citation counts to rank journals was a technique used in the early part of the nineteenth century but the measurement of these links to rank authors and papers was pioneered by Eugene Garfield at the Institute for Scientific Information.

Science Citation Index (SCI) provides bibliographic data and cited references from worldwide scientific and technical journals.
This index is an "alphabetical listing by author of all the references (cited items) found in footnotes and bibliographies of journals (citing items) covered in the SCI".
Because this index uses the authors' words rather than the indexer's term, you may find it advantageous when you know only part of a title or if you know the title but cannot remember the author.

 Science Citation Index explanation
A citation index is a compilation of all the cited references from journal articles indexed in the database.
ISI indexes articles in a core set of journals, so citations from publications like conference proceedings and books may not be represented in the citation count for a particular paper.
Impact relative to field is the citation impact for a journal or university in a particular field divided by citation impact for the field as a whole, worldwide.

Unlike other indexed, this one indexes editorial, letters to the editor, book reviews, etc. Also, since coverage in the citation section is limited only by what an author cites, it is one place you can sometimes verify citations to book chapters.
Coverage in Science Citation Index goes back to 1945, but there is no time limit for the citation index.
Science Citation Index has an "Alert" feature that lets you set up a subject or citation profile to have citations and abstracts automatically emailed to you as new records are added to the database.
