The Science Officer Ash is revealed as an android, placed by the Company on short notice at Thedus to protect the creature, with instructions to regard the crew as "expendable".
(Ash, the android, was terminated by the other crewmembers after his attempted murder of Ripley, an action he took in defense.) Ripley, as the sole survivor of the Nostromo, initiates the ship's self-destruct sequence and escapes in a shuttle craft.
On the whole there are not really many instances of the portrayal of the discipline of science or its method of practice.

Science Officer Ash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ash (ID# 111/C2/01X) was the science officer on the commercial towing vessel Nostromo in the 1979 science fiction film Alien.
Ash violated the Science Division's basic quarantine law (24 hours for decontamination) by opening the main hatch, allowing Kane to enter the ship with the "facehugger" attached to him.
Ash apparently ignored Parker's suggestion to freeze Kane's body (which, presumably would have also frozen the creature's life cycle) and also attempted to discourage Dallas in his decision to cut the facehugger from Kane, on the grounds that it may have resulted in Kane's death, as the parasite was feeding him oxygen.

When Ash and Dallas examine the infected Kane, the other crewmembers watch from the other side of a plate glass window; Parker keeps asking why they don’t just freeze him, and no one listens.
When Dallas tracks the alien through the ship’s underbelly, the others observe his progress on a tracker; before Dallas is killed, Lambert cries, "It’s moving right towards you!" When Parker and Lambert are attacked, Ripley hears the whole thing over the ship’s PA system, but arrives too late to prevent their deaths.
