The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, December 2007 by Spilogale Authors [Fantasy/Science Fiction]
Challenging Destiny is a science fiction and fantasy short story magazine that publishes authors from all over the world.
James Lincoln Warren, author of this month's cover story, is familiar to AHMM readers for his series featuring eighteenth-century "indagator" Alan Treviscoe, but "When the Wind Blows" is a dark, contemporary tale through which California's hot Santa Ana winds snake like a musical motif.

Women science fiction authors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the novel Frankenstein, written in 1818 by Mary Shelley, has been called the first science fiction novel, there is a persistent but false belief that women did not enter the field of science fiction writing until the 1960s and 1970s.
This was followed in the late 1960s and 1970s by a wave of feminist science fiction, by such writers as Joanna Russ and Sheri S. Tepper.
Since then, women science fiction writers have entered all parts of the field, from hard science fiction to science fantasy and everything in between.

 Definitions of Science Fiction
Science fiction is story-telling, usually imaginative as distinct from realistic fiction, which poses the effects of current or extrapolated scientific discoveries, or a single discovery, on the behavior of individuals of society.
Science fiction is a branch of fantasy identifiable by the fact that it eases the "willing suspension of disbelief" on the part of its readers by utilizing an atmosphere of scientific credibility for its imaginative speculations in physical science, space, time, social science, and philosophy.
Science fiction is that branch of fantasy, which, while not true to present-day knowledge, is rendered plausible by the reader's recognition of the scientific possibilities of it being possible at some future date or at some uncertain point in the past.

Note that this partial list contains some authors whose works of fantastic fiction would today be called science fiction, even if they predate, or did not work in that genre.
There is also a considerable overlap with the List of fantasy authors, since many authors are equally comfortable with both genres, and in any case some works deliberately combine the two or blur the distinction.
A great book for looking up authors is A Reader's Guide to Science Fiction by Baird Searles, Martin Last, Beth Meacham, and Michael Franklin.

Whatever: Favorite Science Fiction Authors, Circa 1998
It's not for nothing that a lot of science fiction has scientists, engineers and other nerd types as their heroes, and the SF that doesn't generally features other misfit types as the heroes instead.
With science fiction, either I find a lot more writers whose work appeals to me in spite of the genre, or I mentally have kept the bar for being entertained somewhat lower than in other genres.

Famous Science Fiction Authors - Criteria Indicating Fame
Authors such as Bradbury and Vonnegut who are well-known outside of genre literature are often even more famous than those who have been successful primarily within the sf/f genres.
Many of famous science fiction and fantasy authors have works which were voted among the 100 greatest novels of the century in the reader's choice survey conducted by the Modern Library Board (The complete list is available online from Random House).
It is true that many of these authors, such as Dante and Voltaire, wrote what would clearly be classified as science fiction or fantasy today, and the only reason they are not considered sf/f writers is because they lived and wrote before the modern literary schism between speculative and "literary/mainstream" fiction.

Many science fiction and fantasy writers are "non-religious" (or, more accurately, their "religion" is writing science fiction and fantasy -- in the strictly sociological sense of what constitutes an important motivation or community for them).
Authors have been listed in the table below, grouped by religious affiliation, based on their own statements in published interviews and biographies, information from the author's official website, or because they have written to us to ask to be listed on the page, and specified how and where they should be listed.

There is a surprising amount of agreement among science fiction aficionados that there was a ‘Golden Age’ of the genre, and that it began in the late 1920s and early 1940s, and is especially associated, at least in the USA, with pulp magazines like Weird Tales and Astounding Science Fiction.
Many authors of this period wrote first for these magazines and their stories were later collected and made more widely known in book form in the 50s to 70s.
Also a number of the Golden Age authors have had very long and prolific writing lives, and also began writing collaborative works in the twilight of their careers.
