Topic: Science fiction conventions

Science fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Science fiction is a form of speculative fiction principally dealing with the impact of imagined science and technology upon society and persons as individuals.
The broader category of speculative fiction includes science fiction, fantasy, alternative histories (which often have no particular scientific or futuristic component), and even literary stories where the only fantastic element is the strangeness of their style.
A science fiction writer is generally not trying to write a history of the future that they believe will happen, any more than a writer of westerns is trying to create a historically accurate depiction of the old West.

Science fiction convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Science fiction conventions are gatherings of the community of fans (called science fiction fandom) of various forms of science fiction and fantasy.
Fantasy is usually considered alongside science fiction at conventions (the terms were used interchangeably for most of the period from 1926-1966).
Conventions that are nominally science fiction conventions such as WorldCon are usually also fantasy conventions in all but name.

"Science Fiction Conventions I" by Edward Willett
I was on a couple of panels that dealt with sub-genres of science fiction, one entitled "Fantasy by Streetlight" ("Is there a place for elves in a modern multi-cultural society?"), and another, "Genre Crossing" that looked at such cross-bred fiction as vampire stories set in the Old West and science fiction mysteries.
The kind of SF that has a lot of science in it is called "hard" science fiction, and it often tells stories based on the very latest discoveries of real science, exploring the ramifications of those discoveries on society and on the future of humanity.
Accurately reflecting science, however, is one of the social responsibilities of the SF writer, panelists in another session concurred.

Science Fiction Writer Robert J. Sawyer: Science Fiction Conventions
Somehow the organizers have forgotten to promote the convention: the local SF specialty bookstore only heard about it three days before the event, and when I run into the city's biggest-name SF author at another convention in another city the following weekend, he's stunned to hear that there'd just been a con in his town.
Some SF conventions are magnificent — a chance for a writer to meet with his or her existing audience, and to entice new readers.
Indeed, traveling to SF conventions either with all expenses paid as Guest of Honor or even just on your own tax-deductible nickel is one of the few real perks of the science-fiction writing game.

What Are Science Fiction Conventions Like?
Asking what a real SF convention (that is, a proper fan-run one, not a for-profit enterprise or a pure media-con) is like is inviting that old story about the blind men and the elephant.
It depends on what you do; it also depends on which convention it is, because there is considerable variation, brought about by size, regional variation, and the quirks of the organizers.

Based upon the current number of attendees along with estimated ongoing registrations, we all agreed at a meeting on 22 May that there would not be enough money to meet commitments to attendees, guests, venue and equipment hire.
Nexus has never had to cancel before, but we have seen many conventions fold over the years and usually with debts that prevent/delay a full refund to attendees.
We also hope that the early cancellation will allow those who had pre-booked to take advantage of other conventions that are happening on or around the weekend of 2-4 July.
