Science fiction on television information - Search.com
Science fiction is one of the most eclectic and varied of all the genres of fiction.
One of the stalwarts of science fiction television in its early decades was to be the anthology series, in which a completely new story would be presented with each episode, with new actors, settings and situations, the only link being the producers, genre and the series title.
Science fiction's last attempt at network success was the short-lived show Firefly (2002), created by Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel fame), which ran on the Fox network and, while a failure there, proved incredibly successful on DVD, prompting the creation of a movie released by Universal Studios in September 2005.

Television began to cater for this perhaps more cerebral type of science fiction viewer, possibly inspired by the boom of literary science fiction by the likes of Isaac Asimov which was beginning to take place, or by the rise of the allegorical science-fiction movies that permeated the decade.

 Science-fiction Programs
Although not one of television's predominant genres in terms of overall programming hours, science-fiction nonetheless spans the history of the medium, beginning in the late 1940s as low-budget programs aimed primarily at juvenile audiences and developing, by the 1990s, into a genre particularly important to syndication and cable markets.
Alien invasion was once again the theme on American television in 1983, when NBC programmed a high-profile mini-series that pitted the earth against a race of lizard-like creatures who, though friendly at first, were actually intent on using the earth's population for food.
By far the most active broadcaster in developing science fiction in the 1990s was the FOX network, which used the genre to target even more precisely its characteristically younger demographics.

Post-Apocalyptic Fiction in Movies and Television: From the Landscape of Fiction
Much of science fiction is an effort to depict the way advances in technology may give us three things: new forms of freedom and power; new forms of slavery and "unfreedom"; and destruction on a mass scale.
Works of post-apocalyptic fiction and science fiction are simultaneously critiques of contemporary society, disguised depictions of personal development and the mind, and retellings of ancient myths.
Many works of post-apocalyptic fiction depict characters who are trying to escape from false utopias of technology and simulation, which are really prisons that separate them from external nature and their own human nature.
