City Of Cambridge - Department Announcement
Science festivals are public celebrations that typically involve the organization of a wide range of public science- and technology-related activities – lectures, debates, demonstrations, exhibitions, concerts, plays, poetry readings, etc. – in a particular community over a period of one-to-several days.
Modeled on cultural (art, music, literary) festivals, science festivals aim to make science and technology part of the wider culture by giving most or all sections of the community an opportunity to participate in scientific activities at least once a year.
Cambridge is also served by a number of ‘science-friendly’ media, including newspapers, and NPR radio and TV services, that can be expected both to promote and to participate in a science festival.

ESSAYS ON SCIENCE AND SOCIETY: Why must scientists become more ethically sensitive than they used to be? -- Ziman 282 ...
He was chairman of the Council for Science and Society from 1976 to 1990, and has written extensively on various aspects of the social relations of science and technology.
In universities and in many publicly funded research organizations people practiced "academic science"; in industrial and governmental research and development laboratories they practiced "industrial science." These were two distinct cultures, closely linked in many ways, but dealing with ethical issues quite differently.
Science can no longer be "in denial" of matters that many of us have long tried to bring to the fore.

 Cambridge Science Festival
Cambridge is a 'science city' — a very large number of extremely successful academic and commercial institutions here are heavily invested in science and technology, and the city has a global reputation for its efforts in these areas
Cambridge is also a 'festival city' — a number of arts-based and cultural festivals already flourish here, which suggests that the city is able to support the array of diverse events that is needed to create a festival atmosphere
The key to the success of the Cambridge Science Festival is inclusion — inclusion of all the science-based organizations in the city, inclusion of all the key civic and community organizations in the city, and inclusion of all sections of the community in and around the city.

Cloggie :: Booklog :: The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction
Two of the essays, "gender in science fiction" and "race and ethnicity in science fiction" more properly belonged in the second section, with the first of these duplicating much of what was already said in "feminist theory and science fiction".
Another essay, "the icons of science fiction", was more fitted to the first section, as it was a general essay on some of the more widespread science fiction tropes.
This was also apparent in the essays on politics and relgion in science fiction and the chapter on how the life sciences are treated in science fiction.

James and Mendelsohn, Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction
Acceding to the generally held view that the term genre mostly misses what science fiction is about, she calls it "an ongoing discussion," and later, a "mode of writing," which echoes the sentiments of a number of commentators.
Attention is paid also to science fiction in film and television, a very different animal from that portrayed in literature, and, an area that is critically important, a look at the editors who have shaped the field.
This is not to say that none of these schools has anything to say about science fiction -- quite the opposite is the case, actually, but one has to take their approaches with a grain of salt and a good awareness of what they are not addressing.

Accelrys Seminar: EU Nanotechnology Science Forum: Cambridge, UK Speakers and Abstracts
The synthesis, processing and characterisation of carbon nanotubes, along with related fullerenic structure, present some interesting challenges in terms of relating structural features on the nanoscale to the bulk mechanical and electrical properties of devices and composite materials.
In the Materials Science Department at Cambridge, we have been using a number of different computational approaches to tackling these problems, and I will describe some selected examples.
These include classical molecular dynamics simulations of single and multi-wall nanotube collapse under high pressures, Monte Carlo simulations of nanotube synthesis by chemical vapour deposition onto a metallic catalyst, and coarse-grained molecular mechanics calculations of persistence length.
