The five inhabited islands and their population in the 2001 census are St Mary's (1,666), Tresco (180), St Martin's (142), St Agnes and Bryher (population 165 between them); the total population was 2,153.
Scilly has been inhabited since stone-age times and its history has been one of subsistence living until this century with people living from the land and the sea.
The freehold of the islands is the property of the British Crown (except for Hugh Town, on St Mary's, which was sold to the inhabitants in 1949).

The alternative of making a sea crossing to the islands under sail is to arrange to have your boat loaded by crane onto the deck of the ferry Scillonian then after a three and a half hour trip off loaded at Hugh Town harbour.
The locals of even the small islands mostly use cars but the roads are tiny lanes and quiet enough to be pleasant to use as footpaths.
Going down a size from the smaller inhabited islands there are several islands such as Samson which are just a few hundred yards across but which used to be inhabited when the farming population was larger.

On St. Mary's (the main island) there is a multitude of guest houses, bed and breakfasts and rental cottages and apartments of widely varying quality.
The main body of the island, to the east of Hugh Town, is only lightly inhabited and there is glorious walking, both along the coast and inland.

Two excellent guides to the islands are the Friendly Map and Guide to exploring the Isles of Scilly and Walking in the Isles of Scilly by Paddy Dillon.
The islands have a mild climate as they are bathed by the 'Gulf Stream' running across the Atlantic Ocean up from the Gulf of Mexico.
Their rugged scenery and myriad of small islands along with the chance to see rare seabirds and seals make the Isles of Scilly one of my favourite destinations.
