Scipio Africanus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meanwhile, Scipio's political enemies, led by Cato, had gained ground.
When the Scipiones returned to Rome, two tribunes prosecuted (187) Lucius on the grounds of misappropriation of money received from Antiochus.
As Lucius was in the act of producing his account-books, his brother wrested them from his hands, tore them in pieces, and flung them on the floor of the Senate house.

Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236-184) : Youth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Scipionic faction would appear to have been strongly in favour of the war and their strategy called for a two-pronged attack on the Carthaginian possession in Africa and Spain, the attack on Spain to be led by Scipio's father.
Being 17 or 18 years of age, Scipio was by now eligible to serve in the army; he would join his father's army for his first tour of duty (a roman citizen was expected to serve at least 10 campaigns (years)).
For a time the Scipiones rival, Quintus Fabius Maximus Cunctator ("the Delayer") was in command as Dictator, but his policy of avoiding battle was unpopular with the people, and at the start of the new year, the Scipionic faction succeeded in getting Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Caius Terentius Varro elected as Consuls.

AJP is one of the lacunae in my accretion of references, although I note that RWU has given the source.
On the Scipiones' tomb, all I have is F. Coarelli, *Il sepolcro degli Scipioni a Roma* (Roma, 1988) which is but a tiny little guide book and likely of little use.
I too would be interested in more recent work on the Scipiones in general...

Both were killed by members of the Senate for attempting to make the system more friendly to the lower classes of Rome.
The Gracchi were connected through marriage to the Scipiones, Cornelii, Claudii, and Paulli.

Polybius' family played a role in the resistance, and after 168, he was brought as a political prisoner to Italy, where he lived for eighteen years.
In Rome, he was introduced to the cultural circle of the family of the Cornelii Scipiones, and he accompanied Scipio Aemilianus on his campaigns.
Moreover, Polybius made some voyages himself: for example, he crossed the Alps to find out how Hannibal had invaded Italy, and sailed along the coast of western Africa.

In some cases a further surname might be added to differentiate a specially distinguished family from other members of that gens.
So for example the Cornelii Scipiones, who were part of the Cornelia gens.
It is the gens which make us speak of the Julian or Flavian emperors and the other such dynasties.

A similar objection applies when F. writes of the 'Cornelii' (instead of the 'Cornelii Scipiones') employing the mask of Scipio Africanus, and when she says that, 'Any relative, either by marriage or by blood, could normally be entitled to keep Africanus' imago in his or her atrium' (48).
D is an excellent discussion on 'Etruscan Statues of Ancestors and the Origins of the Imagines' (339-52), and E provides family trees of the Caecilii Metelli, Cornelii Scipiones, and Augustus' Family (353-61).
The thesis is meticulously argued and consistently compelling.

At some point in time, S.A. had incurred the enmity of Cato the Censor (famous for ending every speech to the Senate, on whatever subject, with Karthago delenda est, --- Carthage must be destroyed).
Cato embarked on a persecution of all the Cornelii Scipiones, particularly S.A. and his brother.
The two upstart Scipios offered generous peace terms, outraging Cato and his collaborators.

Roman Civilization Bates College Winter 2002 - M. Imber Bona Dea, Gracchi
There's a famous story about a fellow named Tiberius Gracchus.
He was a Roman whose family was of plebeian origin, but had clearly integrated into the ranks of the elite and were allied in politics and marriage with the Scipiones.
Journeying between Rome and Spain during Rome's wars to subdue Spain (he began serving in Spain in 137 BCE), young Tiberius noticed that there were no farmers working the fields in Italy, only slaves, working on the latifundia of magnates.
