A number of farmers are exiting the Christmas tree business, a sector that appears to be declining in Rhode Island even as the business grows nationwide.
Officials at the Rhode Island Christmas Tree Growers Association have seen their membership dip by 150 in 1980 to 60 today.
Christmas tree farms started sprouting across the state two decades ago, when Rhode Island officials encouraged dairy farmers to take advantage of federal tax breaks by turning dairy pastures into tree farms, said Chase, a past president of the tree grower's association.

Scituate's first town meeting was held at the Angell Tavern in South Scituate, with Stephen Hopkins elected as the first moderator and Joseph Brown as clerk.
Stephen Hopkins later became a governor of Rhode Island and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

From 1983 to 1987, the mean sodium concentration in tributaries to the Scituate Reservoir increased from 7.9 to 19.8 milligrams per liter (mg/L), and the mean chloride concentration increased from 16.9 to 26.4 mg/L (Rhode Island Department of Administration, 1988).
To determine the effects of the State-mandated introduction in 1990 of the use of a reduced-sodium deicing agent on State-maintained roads in the Scituate Basin, the relation between median stream-sodium concentration and subbasin-road density was determined separately for data collected from January 1983 to December 1989 and from March 1990 to April 2000.
The effects of road-salt applications on streams that contribute water to the Scituate Reservoir were examined by the use of sodium- and chloride-concentration data collected by the PWSB at regular intervals from January 1983 through December 2000 at 31 tributary-streammonitoring stations in the Scituate Reservoir drainage basin.
