Scituate was settled by a group of people from Plymouth about 1627, who were joined by immigrants from the County of Kent in England.
Scituate used to be the site of international broadcasting radio station WNYW, which broadcast on the shortwave bands in the late 1960s.
Scituate is bordered on the south by Marshfield, on the west by Norwell and Hingham, all of which are in Plymouth County, and on the northwest by Cohasset, in Norfolk County.

This white-over-red configuration was supposed to allow mariners to differentiate Scituate Light from Boston Light a few miles up the coast, but the white and red lights tended to merge from a distance, and for some years vessels continued to crash into the dangerous ledges offshore.
In August 1994, Scituate Light's comeback climaxed when the nation's eleventh oldest lighthouse was relighted as a private aid to navigation.
Scituate Light is easy to drive to and there's a large parking lot.
