Digimorph - Sciurus niger (Eastern fox squirrel)
Sciurus niger, the eastern fox squirrel, is the largest tree squirrel in North America.
This can be easily seen by comparing Sciurus to Cynomys ludovicianus, the fl-tailed prairie dog, Spermophilus columbianus, the Columbian ground squirrel, and S.
However, allozyme studies suggest that Sciurus is most closely related to Microsciurus, the neotropical dwarf squirrels, and together they form a clade that is the sister taxon to Tamiasciurus, the red squirrels.

Pecan Handling Time in the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
The main objectives in this study are to observe the behaviors of squirrels during different parts of the day, and how their behaviors vary with temperature.
For a long time, the eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) has been an important research tool for the study of animal ecology (Spritzer 1999).
Although squirrels were observed to be slightly more active in cold weather than in hot weather, they generally tend to show decreased activity during both temperature extremes because it is energetically costly.

Red squirrel - Sciurus vulgaris: More Information - ARKive
There is evidence to suggest that red squirrels have fluctuated in numbers in the UK since the last ice age.
In the last 50 years, however, their dramatic decline has been due to loss and fragmentation of habitat, disease and in particular, competition from the introduced grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).
The two species are known to coexist in some locations but while there is no evidence of aggressive behaviour by greys, competition for limited food sources tends to favour the introduced animal.
