In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  Spotted Arowana - Scleropages leichardti
One of the two Scleropages species found in Australia, this is the smaller and less likely to be found in an aquarium Arowana.
Unlike its counterpart, the Jardini, this type of fish does not grow to be as big as the Asian Arowanas thus is less sought after by hobbyists.
Scleropages are found to have a life span of about half a century and fossils (!) date back to the Jurassic era, making Arowanas the most prehistoric aquarium pet today.

Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
There had been local extirpation of Scleropages formosus in some drainages in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra due to over-collecting, but is still relatively common in some areas.
Perhaps in 10 years time, there will be no more need for the harvest of wild stocks, except perhaps for the occasional specimens to supplement captive stocks to improve their genetic composition.
The different colour varieties may well represent different species, but there are insufficient preserved specimens with good data for the necessary comparisons.

 Species
The first species is known by the names: Northern Saratoga, Jardine Saratoga, Gulf Saratoga, Australian Gold or Pearl Arowana and Jardini Saratoga (Scleropages jardini).
Both species were once known (in Australia and still occuring in other parts of the world) as Barramundi's, though this practice is to be discouraged as it leads to confusion with the true Barramundi (Lates calcarifer).
The genus name Scleropages means hard leaves, which refers to their scales.
