Sclerophyll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sclerophyllous plants occur in all parts of the world but are most typical of Australia; they have hard leaves and short internodes (the distance between leaves along the stem).
Often seeming drab and barren to the casual European eye, dry sclerophyll forest is highly complex and diverse, with up to twice as many different plant species per square metre as rainforest, and high animal diversity too.
Sclerophyllous plants are anything but newcomers—the Proteaceae family dates back 80 million years to the late Cretaceous—but sclerophyll forests did not start becoming a major part of the landscape until around 15 million years ago.

 Sclerophyll forests
Sclerophyll forests are a typically Australian vegetation type having plants with hard, short and often spiky leaves.
There are two types of sclerophyll forests, dry and wet, both of which have a canopy of eucalypts.
Dry sclerophyll forests are 10 - 30 metres tall and have a hard-leaved understorey, whereas wet sclerophyll forests are taller than 30 metres and have a soft-leaved understorey, such as tree ferns.

The less extensive wet sclerophyll forests have a tall eucalyptus overstory, 30 metres or more (typically Mountain Ash, Alpine Ash, Messmate Stringybark or Manna Gum), and have a soft-leaved, fairly open understorey (tree ferns are common), and require ample rainfall - 1000mm (40 inches) or more.

! Endangered Sclerophyll ! Tropical Rainforest, North Queensland, Australia
Wet sclerophyll forest describes a narrow band of vegetation which, in northeast Queensland, occurs on the western edge of the rainforest above 600m.
Scientists have documented a 50% loss of this forest type during the previous 50 years and many are worried that a complete take-over by rainforest could lead to the extinction of certain plant and animal species.
With new evidence that rainforests are invading the wet sclerophyll forests at an alarming rate, scientists are assessing the impact of rainforest invasion on the wet sclerophyll flora and fauna.

Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains of the NSW North Coast, Sydney Basin and South East Corner bioregions is the name given to the ecological community associated with humic clay loams and sandy loams, on waterlogged or periodically inundated alluvial flats and drainage lines associated with coastal floodplains.
The composition of Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains is primarily determined by the frequency and duration of waterlogging and the texture, salinity nutrient and moisture content of the soil.
Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains of the NSW North Coast, Sydney Basin and South East Corner bioregions is included within the 'Coastal Floodplain Wetlands' and 'Coastal Swamp Forest' vegetation classes of Keith (2002, 2004).

The spectrum between species with low leaf mass per area (LMA), short-lived leaves and high photosynthetic rate to those with high LMA, long-lived leaves and low photosynthetic rate is one of the major spectra of variation between plant species, and is of particular relevance to the ‘carbon-gain strategy’ of plants.
In this study the relationship between physical properties of leaves and their lifespan was quantified for 17 sclerophyllous species from a nutrient-poor woodland in eastern Australia.
Fracture properties of leaves (force of fracture, tissue toughness) and other leaf traits [LMA, thickness, dry-matter content (DMC), leaf area] were measured for each species and evaluated as predictors of leaf lifespan in cross-species and phylogenetic analyses, and for intercorrelation with one another.
