  Species info - Scolopax saturata
A recent review of Asian woodcocks showed that Dusky Woodcock Scolopax saturata be best considered as two species: Javan Woodcock Scolopax saturata and New Guinea Woodcock S.
Scolopax saturata inhabits the damp, primary montane forest of Java and Sumatra, Indonesia.
Although the forests of Java and Sumatra are under a great deal of pressure, montane forests are relatively secure and so this species is currently considered Near Threatened.

However, all these years, there was an impression that the nomenclature of certain members of the scolopax group, in the Ophrys genus was erroneous and old.
Only in the islands, detailed studies during the last years, lead to the recognition of “stable” species, morphologically separate, with best paradigms, the Ophrys minutula from Lesvos, Ophrys leptomera from Euboia and Ophrys dodekanensis and Ophrys cornutula from Rhodes.
In this way, they tried to solve the identification problems and determine more precisely the present status of plants of the scolopax group, in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Two benthopelagic species, the snipefish (Macroramphosus scolopax [%IRI=34.0]) and the boarfish (Capros aper [%IRI=26.8]), were by far the predominant fish prey items.
A comparison of thornback ray's diet in relation to sex, length, depth and area of capture (Table 2) suggests that C. aper and M. scolopax were by far the most important prey for all subgroups examined.
The second most important prey item was the snipefish (M. scolopax [%IRI=3.0]), which represented 11.2% of food by number and 2.7% by weight.

Abstract: The objective of this project is to band representative samples of wild waterfowl as part of a cooperative effort by state, provincial, and federal agencies in the Atlantic Flyway that provides crucial data for management of the waterfowl resource.
Abstract: The purpose of this 2-year project was to determine sources of mortality, survival rates, habitat use, and movements of American woodcock (Scolopax minor) during fall in local areas in NW Pennsylvania, and to determine the effect of fall survival on spring population size.
Project personnel used mist nets, ground traps, and night-lighting to capture birds, which were measured, leg-banded, and radiotagged at ENWR-SGL 69, the non-hunted site and at SGLs 314-101, the hunted site.

We examined winter distribution and fidelity to wintering areas for the American Woodcock (Scolopax minor), which exhibits reversed, sexual size dimorphism.
Unfortunately, most previous investi- gations of differential distribution patterns on the wintering grounds have been conducted on species for which the observed distributional differences are consistent with predictions of two or all three of these hypotheses.
We investigated winter distribution patterns of American Woodcock (Scolopax minor).
