 Cleridae: Checkered Beetles
Both adults and larvare are voracious predators of various lignicolous insects, particularly of bark beetles (Scolytinae) and are commonly encountered in coniferous forests where there are dead or dying trees or limbs.
This is a slender, narrow species with very prominent rows of serial punctures and an elytral pattern of three yellowish markings; the first running obliquely from humerus to suture, the second an undulate post-medial band, and the third a pair of yellow sub-apical spots.
The adults and larvae are predaceous on various wood-boring insects, particularly bark beetles (Scolytinae).

In this study, we explore the relative importance of insular isolation and host plant switching in the diversification of a group of bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) feeding and breeding in woody Euphorbia spurges.
Reconstruction of species-level phylogenies is a powerful tool in the study of macroevolutionary patterns of diversification, where the assessment of putative sister species provides a quantitative measure of the factors associated with cladogenetic events.
Preliminary analyses of 839 EF-Ia coding characters, from 12 crypturgine and 45 additional species of Scolytinae and Platypodine, confirmed the previously suggested monophyly of Crypturgini (Wood, 1986), and that Dolurgus, and Crypturgus plus Cisurgus, are nested sets of outgroups suitable for all further analyses of a monophyletic Aphanarthrum plus Coleobothrus.

This thesis evaluates the significance of single-year defoliation by the pine looper moth (Bupalus piniaria L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) and secondary attack by the pine shoot beetle (Tomicus piniperda L.) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) for yield losses in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.).
In a seven-year study, tree mortality and growth losses were quantified after a B. piniaria outbreak with a subsequent T. piniperda infestation at Hökensås in 1996.

My dissertation research at Texas A&M is on the systematics of the bark beetle genus Xylosandrus.
As is typical of bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), Xyleborini beetles construct and inhabit galleries within the woody tissues of host trees.
Xylosandrus are "ambrosia beetles", which means they feed primarily on a symbiotic ambrosia fungus which grows along the walls of their galleries.

Following our work on the genus and family-group names of the Curculionoidea we are now including all previously-omitted names (Scolytinae and Platypodinae) and all species names for the superfamily.
The names are initially being entered from secondary literature (primarily the Coleopterorum Catalogous and the Zoological Record).

The Electronic Catalogue of Weevil Names is a project in progress.
Ultimately it will contain all family, genus and species-group names in the Curculionoidea, a group of beetles with some 60,000 described species which includes many important insects, including the bark beetles (Scolytinae) and powder-post beetles (Platypodinae).
Currently the database contains some 100.000 names, including all generic and family-group names, in their current taxonomic position, and based on Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal’s (1999, 2002) catalogue of weevil family and genus names.
