Topic: Scopitone

In the News (Sun 15 Nov 09)

Scopitone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scopitone was a trendy invention of the 1960s, a jukebox with a 16 mm film component, the forgotten forerunner of music video.
The first Scopitones were made in France around 1960: Johnny Hallyday covered Los Bravos' "Black is Black" (as "Noir c'est noir") and the "Hully Gully" was danced round the edge of a French swimming pool.
The Scopitone fad spread to West Germany, where the Kessler Sisters burst out of twin steamer trunks to sing "Quando Quando" on the dim screen that surmounted the jukebox.

Cabinet Magazine Online - The Clean Room/ Love machines: unwinding the technology of the Scopitone
Scopitone players, bulky forerunners of the video jukebox, were mechanical, coin-operated vending machines outfitted with 30" viewing screens and internal mechanisms that delivered a selection of short 16-millimeter films on demand.
Although the Scopitone's mystique as an icon of popular entertainment was fading by the end of the 1960s, within a few years a large proportion of the original CAMCA projection mechanisms inside Scopitone players were reassembled for alternative ideological uses.
Scopitone machines were planned originally for family-friendly venues like pizza parlors and bus terminals, even if they also surfaced in more swinging commercial spaces like after-hours nightclubs and bowling alley cocktail lounges.

In the 1999 article "The Jukebox That Ate the Cocktail Lounge: The Story of Scopitone," touted by Haertling as the definitive chronicle of the device, journalist Jack Stevenson acknowledges that the Scopitone wasn't the first contraption of its type.
Dubbed the Scopitone, the apparatus had room for 36 films that could be specifically chosen by paying customers, just like jukebox 45s, for the cost of a quarter.

Scopitone was taking on a new identity as it underwent a metamorphosis from a novelty dependent on French product to a solid "exposure medium" for popular American recording stars who were beginning to see the light.
Scopitones were geared to pure entertainment, not any kind of faithful recreation of the pathos of the songs.

The Scopitone, popular in bars and lounges, was a small-screened jukebox/16 mm film player, on which people could watch video-like films and listen to music.
The Scopitone films seem like a product of the '50s rather than the '60s; everyone is impeccably dressed, singing about love, and vaguely infusing sexuality in the form of swimsuits and short skirts--but nothing directly addresses fornication like the hippie/Woodstock '60s.
Ironically, however, the reason Scopitone went out of business is that they were sued by the Back Porch Majority for the lewd sexual content added to their video of "The Mighty Mississippi." That, and alleged Mafia financing.

A cross between a jukebox and a 26-inch color TV, was the result of technology developed for use during WWII, turned by CAMECA to civilian use, projecting 3-minute Scopitones—song films—for a quarter to tipsy audiences in clubs and bars.
American Scopitones bordered on soft-core porn (for the early 60s, that is): chicks gyrated wildly (and not even in time to the music) wearing either the ubiquitous bikini, a similarly skimpy outfit or sent through a modified striptease, ending up in even less.
The Scopitone producersU odd interpretations of music yielded not a few stereotypes of all kinds of other culture, especially American, but could be so disjointed to be curiously interesting.

Because Scopitones were filmed in color, they provide an opportunity to see artists more vibrantly than the fl and white standard of a 1960s television broadcast or B-movie.
In addition to Scopitones, there were also Soundies, Snader Telescriptions, Official Films, etc. While these other "music videos" did not play on a Scopitone Jukebox, they are similar in production quality and are significant in musical history.
