Indian Scops Owl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Indian Scops Owl, Otus bakkamoena, is an owl which is a resident breeder in south Asia from eastern Arabia through India, except the far north, and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia.
The Indian Scops Owl is a small (23-25cm) owl, although it is the largest of the scops owls.
This species is very similar to the slightly larger partially migratory Collared Scops Owl Otus lettia, which is sometimes considered to be a race of Indian Scops Owl, and which winters within the breeding range of the latter form.

Owls must turn their entire heads to look sideways, facilitated by relatively long and flexible necks that permit the head to be rotated through 270 degrees.
Owls feed entirely on living animals, with the size of the prey proportional to the size of the owl, from insects to mammals as large as hares.
The eastern screech owl is classified as Otus asio, and the Eurasian scops owl as Otus scops.

Owls are easily recognized; most everyone in the world knows about owls.
Since owls are night birds, they are difficult to see although their characteristic songs and calls can often be easily heard.
Owls of the genus Glaucidium (pygmy-owls and owlets) are primarily crepuscular but can occasional appear in broad daylight to the surprise of all, as did this Northern Pygmy-Owl (below right) that I found sitting on top a telephone pole at mid-morning.

As it is believed to be the harbinger of death to the house on which it perches, it is generally abhorred by the local population of Auroville's bioregion.
Unlike owls of the Strigdea Family (to which the 3 other owls of Auroville belong), the Barn owl relies entirely on its hearing to locate its prey.
Unlike the closely related common Scops owl 'Otus scops', which lives a somewhat social life, this species is highly territorial.

The evocative frog-like call of the common Scops Owl is as characteristic of the savannah night as the whoop of a hyena.
All owls lay their eggs in cavities, on the ground or in a nest built by another bird, as it is obviously impossible for a nocturnal bird to gather nesting material of any kind.
The eerie screech of this ghostly-white owl is certainly a sound to send a shiver down the spine of the uninitiated, but it is a harmless - and in fact very useful — bird, as far as people are concerned, for it helps to control the numbers of rats and mice.

According to Marshall and King (1988), the closest relative of the flammulated owl is the pallid scops owl (O.brucei), a migratory species that breeds from the Middle East to Pakistan.
In the Rocky Mountains, flammulated owls are associated with the dry pine belt, foraging primarily in late successional stands of ponderosa pine that are pure or mixed with oak, pinyon pine, true fir, Douglas fir, or aspen (Reynolds and Linkhart 1987, Reynolds et al.

A small owl, this species has a rather wide but patchy distribution in the mountains of the western U.S. Some authorities think the species may be more closely related to Old World Scops owls rather than the North American screech-owls because its song shares more similarities with the Old World group.
Like many owls this species is in need of much further research to better understand its ecology, population dynamics, distribution, and status but it is though to be declining from certain forest management practices within its western range.
Flammulated Owls are migratory and winter from Mexico south to Guatemala.

The likelihood of post-natal dispersal was higher for females, young owls (1-2 yrs old), owls that did not have a mate in the previous year, and owls that lost their mate from the previous year through death or divorce.
The large forest owl conservation strategy involved gathering all existing records, conducting additional surveys to fill in gaps, developing a model of preferred owl habitat, conducting preliminary Population Viability Analysis and negotiating a process by which a substantial population of owls would be protected in reserves which met criteria for size and habitat quality.
