Running up the score - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Running up the score is a term used in sports, although mostly in high school and college football (American), to describe a team scoring more points than necessary just for the sake of scoring more points.
Running up the score is considered offensive by nearly all fans, players, and coaches, albeit with differences in opinion on how big of an insult it is. For instance, the former head coach at the University of Florida, Steve Spurrier, was infamous for running up the score.
Many voters (coaches are particularly notorious for this) simply look at box scores before punching in their votes, which have a huge impact on who goes to BCS games, including the national championship.

 Filmtracks: The Score (Howard Shore)
Along with his score for the crime thriller The Score in the summer, Shore is also composing the music for the newest film rendition of the fantasy classic, Lord of the Rings for the autumn.
But his scores always have a gritty edge to them, and The Score is a perfect example of that.
Some of the percussive underscore is high strung and an obviously tense accompaniment for the sneaking around on screen, though some of the cues, such as the third "Flashback" track on the album, exhibit more of the jazzy nightclub feeling, relying to the bass, guitar, drums, and (oddly) vibes to carry the constant rhythm.

Early polyphony was notated in score until the early 13th cent., when choir books, in which the parts were written out separately one after another, came into use.
A full score is one such as an orchestral conductor uses, in which each part is on a separate staff, while in a condensed score two or more parts are written on a single staff.
In a vocal score or piano-vocal score of an opera or a choral work, the vocal parts are written out in full but the accompaniment is reduced to two staffs.

A score is the written or printed music that shows all the instrumental and/or vocal parts that make up a composition.
Conductors conduct “from the score,” and they spend many hours studying scores in order to learn works in detail and formulate their interpretative ideas.
The “full score” for a piece is usually either too big and unwieldy, or inconvenient to read because of the small print size necessary to fit all the parts on the page.

If there are any criticisms to be levelled at The Score it has to be on the basis that it really is a by the numbers crime caper and lacks none of the originality or vitality of something like Reservoir Dogs and nor does it really take full advantage of its AAA list cast.
That said The Score is enjoyable first and foremost for its excellent cast and the opportunity to see them share screen time.

I may be in a minority, but I enjoy the character work De Niro has been doing in the last few years much more than I enjoyed the recessive and opaque qualities that sometimes seemed to inhibit him (particularly in Scorsese pictures like "The King of Comedy" and "Casino").
In "The Score" he seems to be considering each move so thoroughly there doesn't appear to be anything that could force him to make a stupid move; you get the feeling that giving in to greed or temptation would, for this man, amount to violation of dignity.
The trouble is that that chic urban comfort leaches into every corner of "The Score." The movie is so determinedly low-key that after a while it sits on the screen like a layout from Architectural Digest.

MovieCritic.ca - Review - The Score (2001) - Frank Oz Pulls Off His First Thriller
The movie tells the story of Nick Wells (De Niro), a professional and highly successful international thief who wants to pull one last job so that he can retire (it's the cliché of clichés, but it's easily forgiven), settle down with his girlfriend (Bassett) and focus on running his legitimate business: a Montréal Jazz Club.
Another strong point for The Score is the performances of the cast, although this shouldn't surprise anyone since the principal male actors have been typecast in their "usual" roles: De Niro as the mastermind criminal, Norton as the man with dual roles, and Brando as a crime boss.
Since The Score is mostly a "formula" movie, I doubt that it will stand the test of time.
