  The Scotch Game
The Scotch Game, his latest book, is a much-needed study of 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4, an opening that Kasparov has consistently employed, stating that he considers it the only serious alternative to the Ruy Lopez (3.Bb5).
Since I have done some work on the Scotch with Tal Shaked, and since I recommend it to my students, I was able to assess Well's treatment of some of the critical lines.
Once again, the organization of material by illustrative games has its drawbacks, although the breakdown of lines in the Scotch is more readily comprehensible than with many openings.

In the Scotch game, White has to be willing to play simplified positions with a small advantage.
Firstly, the Scotch does have the reputation of high number of draws (many exchanges, seemingly little advantage) as most of you pointed out.
I used to play the Scotch as my second white opening (if I didn't feel like playing the Ruy Lopez), but now I dislike the awkwardness of the first two moves, like two kids that have been told to dance by their parents, it generally doesn't lead to a good dance/game.

Indeed it was the game played by the young Victorian Tom Wills (one of the two umpires at that inaugural match) when he was sent to school at Rugby.
Scotch's nominee was a Dr John McAdam, a Glasgow University medical graduate, and a chemistry master at Scotch at the time.
In this vein he concluded prophetically that in amateur sport, the game itself was more important than the actual result, and it was just as glorious to lose as it was to win.

When he kicks it into the wrong division or on a line, he is out; and in each case the next in turn plays from taw, and the other players, when their turns come around again, begin at the division they failed in.
