Scotia Sea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scotia Sea (57°30′S 040°00′W) is partly in the Southern Ocean and mostly in the Atlantic Ocean between Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula, and bordered on the west by Drake Passage.
Habitually stormy and cold, the most famous traverse of this frigid sea was made in 1916 by Sir Ernest Shackleton and four others in a lifeboat (named James Caird) when they left Elephant Island and reached South Georgia two weeks later.

Seismotectonics and relative plate motions in the Scotia Sea region
The dephs of two earthquakes (35 km and 55 km) and one shallow thrust faulting event suggest continued subduction along the South Shetland Trench, but the underthrusting is largely aseismic due to the young plate age and slow subduction rate.
The magnitude and depth of normal faulting earthquakes along Bransfield Strait and the South Scotia Ridge are suggestive of diffuse extension rather than typical organized mid-ocean spreading, which is generally associated with smaller and shallower earthquakes.

The Scotia Sea is an outstanding example of back-arc spreading, which is revealed in some detail by free-air gravity anomaly maps derived from the latest release of gravity anomaly data acquired south of 30 S. These data confirm the existence of a number of inactive spreading ridges within the Scotia Sea and surrounding small basins.
The spreading ridge axis in the east Scotia Sea comprises seven or more segments, separated by small, mainly sinistral, offsets and exhibits a median valley with depths of 200-1000 m that is reflected in free-air lows of 10-40 mGal.
Whereas the process of spreading in Drake Passage and the east Scotia Sea was comparable to mid-ocean ridges, that in the central Scotia Sea may have been disorganized, as observed in some western Pacific back-arc basins.

Cold water gets mixed in ‘blender’ of Scotia Sea
The Scotia Sea, located between the Antarctic and the tip of South America, acts like a ‘blender’ on the very cold ocean waters that influence global ocean circulation patterns and ultimately climate, according to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and published today (28 February) in the international journal Nature.
We’ve shown for the first time that the coldest water from the bottom of the Weddell Sea gets violently churned up as it passes through gaps in the ridge system found on the seabed in the Scotia Sea, mixing upwards towards the surface.
The research was carried out as part of the ALBATROSS project (Antarctic Large Scale Box Analysis and the Role of the Scotia Sea) which was designed to measure the flow of water into and out of the Scotia Sea in order to determine the role it plays in ocean circulation.
