Scotland, or in Scottish Gaelic, Alba, is a country and former independent kingdom of northwest Europe, and one of the four nations comprising the United Kingdom.
Scotland took part in a personal union with England in 1603, when the Scottish King James VI also became James I of England.
This began with the Education Act of 1696 and became compulsory for children from the implementation of the Education Act of 1872 onwards.

Act of Parliament imposes a fine on all who fail to inform the parish minister of the birth of a child (repealed 1706, but see 1783)
To be buried under this Act normally means that the person buried was a non-conformist; the burial service was performed by a Non-Conformist minister, but in a Church of England church, as the burial was going to take place in the churchyard.
