The island, Gruinard, just off the mainland, in Gruinard Bay, half way between Ullapool and Gairloch in the Highlands, was so contaminated that it was deemed out-of-bounds for almost 50 years.
The final WW II report on the Gruinard Island tests suggested anthrax could be used to render cities uninhabitable "for generations".
In 1986 an English company was paid half a million pounds to decontaminate the 520-acre island by soaking the ground in 280 tonnes of formaldehyde diluted in 2000 tonnes of seawater.

The community raised £4m to buy the island, rather than see it sold to another private landlord.
The official handover of the island on Friday took place at a special ceremony where a set of keys was presented to community chairman Willie McSporran.
"They believed we already lived an island idyll, but everything was not rosy, we did have issues and challenges to deal with, such as restrictive leases, a lack of communication and community involvement with the landowner and limited investment in the island's infrastructure.

I had been sent to Scotland by the Navy for a 6 month tour of duty, and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my wife, who was to join me in a couple of weeks.
During my excursions I had seen the island in the bay, but was not overly excited by it, just a hill surrounded by water, or so I thought.
The story goes that the painting was discovered by a becalmed yachtsman who rowed to the island to stretch his legs.

Armed with a £40 Enterprise Allowance Grant, the germ of an idea, a camera her father had given her and an old bike, she took six photographs of the tiny island of Coll, just west of Mull, where she lived.
