Located to the north of the River Clyde, north west of Glasgow City Centre and to the south of Jordanhill, Scotstoun was, until the early 1860's, the site of the Oswald family estate, which was centred around Scotstoun House.
By 1861, the westward march of the shipbuilding yards had reached Scotstoun with the opening of the Connell's Scotstoun Yard.
The southern part of Scotstoun is characterised by late 19th/ early 20th Century tenements, whilst to the north it is mostly inter- and post-war local authority housing.

In Daringandrsquo;s case the aft or rear blocks were built at BAE Systemsandrsquo; yard in Govan and floated downriver to Scotstoun, the mid sections were built in Scotstoun and the bow was built by VT in Portsmouth before being floated all the way up the West coast of the country and up the Clyde.
This division of the work between yards across the UK has pioneered a new way of building complex warships and the same concept will be applied, at a larger scale, to the construction of the Royal Navyandrsquo;s two new aircraft carriers.
The blocks were built at BAE Systems Naval Shipsandrsquo; yards at Govan and Scotstoun and at VT's Portsmouth yard.

Staff at Firsts state of the art new depot in Scotstoun can be assured of a safe and secure working environment, after the depot received two highly regarded security awards from the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS) this week under the "Secured by Design' and "Secured Car Parks' schemes.
The depot building design had to fulfil a number of criteria in order to gain the "Secured by Design' (SBD) certification, including the establishment of tight security measures at entrances and exits, the fitting of CCTV cameras, security alarms, locks on windows and doors and establishment of secure boundaries around the building.
At a formal visit to Scotstoun depot last week, Firsts Chief Executive Moir Lockhead was presented with the two certificates from Chief Inspector Donnie MacLeod, Force Crime Prevention Officer, Strathclyde Police and Terri Cartey, Scottish Development Manager, Secured Car Parks.

I believe that this is an Adair map from the 18th Century, showing Scotstoun House to the South.
Seems some of Scotstoun House survived well into the 20th Century although almost all trace of its once lush orchards is gone by 1939:

The later maps show this home as "Scotstoun House" I used to have a map which showed a Children's Home where the Kingsaway flats are now.
This was the Scotstoun House known to the older residents of Scotstoun and Yoker.
The Factors of Scotstoun Estate were well aware of it's value for housing development towards the end of the 1890s, and a company was formed "Scotstoun Estate Building Company" to plan and build the terrace houses which occupy a vast expanse of land between Lime Street and Queen Victoria Drive.

Both BAE Systems yards are going through tough times at the moment, Scotstoun has won a contract to build the first of the new Type 45 warships but Govan still waits to see if they will win the roll on-roll off ferries contract that they so desperately need to keep the yard open.
These are bad times for Clyde ship building but hopefully they will come through into better times.
