Altman was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy following completion of Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in August 1981.
Altman was awarded the Navy Air Medal for his role as a strike leader flying over Southern Iraq in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH.
Altman was one of two operators of the robot arm transporting the EVA crew during the spacewalk.

Scott Altman was born in Lincoln, Illinois on August 15, 1959, but grew up in Pekin (Tazewell County) - where his parents, Fred and Sharon Altman, still reside.
Scott had wanted to fly for the Air Force but was rejected because regulations said he was too tall to sit in an airplane cockpit.
Scott was one of two operators of the robot arm transporting the EVA crew during the six hour spacewalk to connect power, data and communications cables to the newly arrived Zvezda Service Module and the station.

Commander Scott Altman grew up in Pekin, graduated from PCHS in 1977.
Altman also performed many stunts while flying for Tom Cruise in "Top Gun." In 1994, after receiving the Navy's Air Medal for his role as a strike leader flying over southern Iraq, he was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA.
Altman and the crew orbited the earth 256 times, covering 6.3 million miles over 381 hours.

In August 1987, he was selected for the Naval Postgraduate School-Test Pilot School Coop program and graduated with Test Pilot School Class 97 in June 1990 as a Distinguished Graduate, spending the next two years as a test pilot on various F-14 projects.
Following two years as Shuttle Branch chief for the Astronaut Office and lead for the Cockpit Avionics Upgrade, he was assigned on temporary duty to NASA Headquarters as Deputy Director, Requirements Division of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate.
Altman is assigned to command the final Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

BLOOMINGTON - Scott Altman was 10 years old and growing up in Central Illinois when he looked at the moon and realized someone was walking on its surface.
At age 47, astronaut Altman was chosen recently to command a mission on which he and six other astronauts will rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2008.
Altman, who will be making his second trip to the telescope and his fourth into space, sees the work as critical to NASA's future missions to the moon and Mars and eventually to destinations beyond our solar system.
