The county was organized in [1821] and named for John Scott, first Congressman from Missouri.
On January 28, 2004, the Scott County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older.
