On 25 December 1902, British Captain William Colbeck discovered the island, naming it Markham Island after Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society and the architect of the "Discovery".
Scott Island, the remains of a volcanic crater, is rarely visited.
During the winter, the whole island is covered by snow and ice, but during the summer, large areas of rock are exposed.
