Scott La Rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scott Sterling (March 2, 1962–August 27, 1987), better known by his stage name Scott La Rock, was the original DJ for the hip hop group Boogie Down Productions.
La Rock was shot to death in 1987 while attempting to break up a fight involving BDP colleague D-Nice.
One result of La Rock's death was KRS's transformation into a more thoughtful artist who continually spoke out against violence in the ghetto (e.g., Stop the Violence on BDP's album By All Means Necessary).

Kid Rock earns the right to take a break or two within his otherwise nonstop two-hour rock-and-rap house party of a live show.
In his last couple Cincinnati shows Kid Rock came off like a hip-hop version of his good pal Hank Williams, Jr., as he loosely dabbled in all sorts of styles and covers with fun but sloppy results.
The first 45 minutes of the show were the best, beginning with "Son of Detroit," a blast of rock-rap in which Kid Rock name-checked a laundry list of his favorite musicians - everyone from country star Merle Haggard to hip-hop pioneer Scott La Rock - over a John Lee Hooker riff.

Not unlike the media’s condemnation of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s, Scott Henry’s Buzz club night came under the gun after a thoroughly sensationalized “exposé” supposedly showed tables full of discarded pills and powders and young clubbers smoking marijuana.
No wonder then, that Scott’s made the big leap from nationally known talent to a force to be reckoned with worldwide, having been recently booked at Privelege in Ibiza—one of the largest clubs in the world, mind you—as well as some of the most esteemed clubs in England.

Born in Brooklyn, KRS-One, whose real name is Lawrence Parker (apparently called KRS because of his early interest in Hare Krishna), was a homeless nobody when a social worker named Scott Sterling became his mentor and DJ, Scott La Rock.
KRS-One's raps were political, preachy, and poetic; Scott La Rock cut records down to the bone and the music was spare, hard, and often dubbed by a reggae bassline.
This debut established BDP's street reputation; the next album, which was completed shortly after Scott La Rock was murdered during a party, By All Means Necessary, established BDP's pop reputation.

BDP weren't the first to rap about inner-city violence and drugs, and there's no explicit mention of gangs on Criminal Minded, but it greatly expanded the range of subject matter that could be put on a rap record, and its grittiest moments are still unsettling today.
Overall, the record made its impact through sheer force -- not only KRS-One's unvarnished depictions of his harsh urban environment, but also his booming delivery and La Rock's lean, hard backing tracks (which sound a little skeletal today, but were excellent for the time).
It's important to note that KRS-One hadn't yet adopted his role as the Teacher, and while there are a few hints of an emerging social consciousness, Criminal Minded doesn't try to deliver messages, make judgments, or offer solutions.
