Topic: Scott Leary

  CIA Shrinks and LSD
Scott used the pentathol, in combination with electroshock, to take his victim into a near comatose state, implanted erotic suggestions, and then roused her to consciousness with shots of ritalin.
Leary's awfulness was somewhat forgotten by the time he'd become a staple of the Hollywood gossip columns, before his ashes were fired off into the space that he roamed so freely in his acid-sodden years.
Leary took the drugs to be tested and sallied forth to the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Concord, a maximum security prison, where he embarked on experiments designed, so he said, to see if LSD and psilocybin could be successful agents in behavior modification.

Campbell Scott and Hope Davis play a married pair of dentists, with three daughters, an SUV and another car, one home in the suburbs and another in the country, and all the rest of the setup that might make you think you're in for AMERICAN BEAUTY.
Scott and Davis are shown in bed together a few times, but there's nothing that could qualify as a sex scene (there's an instantaneous flashback of a quick encounter) or even any particularly sexy clothing or nudity.
Scott and Davis have outgrown both *luv* and the original sexual passion that first brought them together, but still they clearly love each other and their children.

The Secret Lives Of Dentists Movie Review
Leary’s patented acerbic anger and frank comedic stylings offers the ideal counterpart for Scott’s stoic demeanor, and the interplay between the two is great, especially since Scott strains to resist most of Leary’s suggestions, but then, can’t help but let things slip out.
Leary is that mean-spirited voice in your head that torments you late at night when you can’t sleep because your mind is rehashing some event where you were wronged or some confrontation coming soon where you practice all the clever and biting things you’re going to say.
Their reconciliation is completely perfunctory; but by this time Scott has banished the decisive voices in his head and simply informs Davis that he doesn’t want to know anything about her affair.

SPLICEDwire | "Final" review (2001) Campbell Scott, Denis Leary, Hope Davis
It's an enticing psychological talker, most of which takes place in Leary's sterile, near-empty ward as he and his outwardly compassionate doctor (Hope Davis) dodge and parry through a battle of wills over his vivid but incomplete delusions.
Unstable and plagued by flashbacks of events surrounding a trauma the doc claims was only a few weeks ago, Leary is adamant in his belief that she's only there to brainwash him into giving his consent to be a guinea pig.
Both characters are a little bloodless, but converted comedian Leary gives a supple, straight-faced performance that holds the attention as he and Davis build a tentative trust between them that is tested when Leary tries to turn the tables on her, hoping she'll help him escape.

 Final
Scott shoots this one man show in the confines of an ugly, institutional yellow room with static direction.
He has no memory of his past and only fleeting glimpses of the time he was found in a gravel quarry, hypothermic and bleeding by the side of a vintage 1953 Ford F-100 pickup truck.
I was, to say the least, less than thrilled with the unbalanced machinations of "Final." Helmer Scott is apparently enamored with the surprise finales of such films as "The Sixth Sense" and "The Others" and tries to duplicate the startling twists these other films so nicely handled.

Scott directed co-stars Hope Davis and Denis Leary in the disappointing Final, and his apparent rapport with these talented performers sets the film aglow.
Leary's role lends an element of Fight Club-style fantasy to an otherwise painstakingly realistic look at family life, and as such, may seem an unwelcome intrusion to some viewers, especially since the inner workings of David's mind are already spelled out in voice-over.
Campbell Scott has always been one of my favorite actors, and his performance as a somewhat repressed, subdued and not very socially adept dentist is excellent and compelling.

Trash City review: The Secret Lives of Dentists   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Campbell Scott plays David Hurst, half of a husband & wife dental team, who becomes convinced that his spouse (Davis) is having an affair; his fear and paranoia takes the form of a trumpeter with bad teeth (Leary), who sits around the house, drinking beer, cooking squirrels and trying to provoke David into hasty action.
Scott and Leary are quite excellent - the former captures the agony of a man scared to act for fear of losing what he has, while no-one could be a better malevolent alter-ego than Leary; their scenes together crackle like popcorn.
Angst can only take you so far, even with good actors, deeply committed to the task [Scott has been attached to the movie since 1989], and the film's climax hardly deserves the name, with one character packing their bags and walking out without a backward thought.
