A young Indian girl, caught between the traditional world of her mother and the present world of the mission, is helped by her Aunt Karana, whose story was told in Island of the Blue Dolphins.
And this causes Zia to look for what she believes in, where she belongs, what her identity is. I think Scott O' Dell did a good job at making a unique plot with a message that gets the reader to think.

Amazon.com: Sir David: Books: Garner Scott Odell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Sir David Mathew, a historical 15th century member of author Odell's researched family tree, proves larger than life, not only by his physical size but by his strength of character and endurance throughout personal and family crises as well as on the field of battle during the period of the Wars of the Roses.
Torn by issues of fidelity and responsibility, Sir David's dilemmas are as poignant now in contemporary times as in the 1460's, at the hands of Odell's sensitive portrayal of personal conflict, religious belief, tragedy, courage, friendship, parenthood, grief, transformation and resolution.
The story is complemented by pictures, drawings, maps and details of the period, lending convincing evidence of accuracy and dedicated research by the author.

 sir david
Garner Scott Odell's fictionalized portrayal of Sir David Mathew chronicles the Wars of the Roses from the viewpoint of a Welshman allied with the House of York.
Clearly, Odell has taken great pains to research the Wars of the Roses, when Henry VI and his French queen Margaret battled supporters of the Duke of York.
Besides several typographical errors and difficulties re-creating maps in fl and white print, Odell also fails to check his facts (for example, that tobacco had arrived in England in the mid-15th century when, in fact, it was not intoduced until 1492) and uses slang that was not spoken at that time.
