A report by Scott S. Sheppard, 27, a graduate student at the University of Hawaii, published in the journal Nature today announces his discovery of 23 new moons around the giant planet.
Until Sheppard's discoveries, astronomers had believed that Saturn, whose brilliant rings have long awed anyone with even a modest telescope, was the satellite champion of the solar system with a total of 31 moons in orbit around it.
Sheppard used the university's 2.2-meter telescope and another 3.6-meter instrument jointly owned by Canada, France and Hawaii because both are equipped with highly sensitive cameras known as charge-coupled devices.

Using an observatory on top of a Hawaiian mountain peak, an astronomer has detected a small moon orbiting Jupiter, bringing the number of known satellites around the king of planets to 40.
Scott Sheppard of the University of Hawaii found the moon, using the school's 2.2-meter telescope atop Mauna Kea.
Jupiter has been called "a mini solar system" because of the many small bodies it controls through its gravity, including nearby moons and comets, and a class of distant asteroids known as Trojans.
