Scott's Thoth was hanging from the Christmas lights by the window, so he wouldn't lose it.
The horn section also assembled: Scott, the multi-instrumentalist from Bablicon (who played trombone as well as sax in the course of the evening), and a short woman with curly fl hair and horn-rimmed cat's-eye glasses who was dwarfed by her huge baritone sax.
Scott was alternating between trumpet and sousaphone, as he usually does, and it was sort of alarming to see the enormous bell of the sousaphone rising up from the back of the stage.

Scott Jordan, however, relied on his legal smarts, not his fists or handgun to push a case to its conclusion.
This attention-getting device does Spillane one better by frontloading the undressed babe (“She was wearing fl panties and a fl bra and that was all.”) in its pages instead of a striptease at the end.
Yet, Scott Jordan remains his own man. The analytical turn of his legal mind and his broader understanding of jurisprudence give him a dramatic edge over the typical PI tales of his time.

Parasol Records : Labels : Hidden Agenda : The Gerbils : Are You Sleepy
Scott plays all-manner of horns with NMH, and the fellows will be playing in the NMH band on the road.
This 36-minute CD from Neutral Milk horn player Scott Spillane and drummer Jeremy Barnes - aided by NMH utility infielders John D'Azzo and Will Westbrook - adds two 1996 singles to "Are You Sleepy," a five-song, cassette-only release, and fleshes things out with a couple more sonic oddities.
Neutral Milk Hotel horn-player extraordinaire Scott Spillane leads the Athens trio, singing in a nasally conversational tone that suggests a Louisiana-fried Mac McCaughan, meanwhile playing acid-drenched guitar that calls to mind both the Seeds and the Surfers.

The Elephant Six Recording Company - The Gerbils
Scott first teamed up with John in 1992 in the group Smilin' Joe Fission, which also included violinist John Fernandes (later a member of The Olivia Tremor Control).
This line-up recorded their first demos but soon slimmed down to just a trio with Scott on guitar/vocals, Will on bass/vocals and John on drums.
John moved to California to pursue his career and Scott split his time between Athens and Texas (and of course was devoting a lot of time to his involvement with Neutral Milk Hotel).

Luna Kafé - The Instruments: Billions of Phonographs
The Instruments is another Elephant 6 big (brass'n'wood) band, fronted by Heather McIntosh (vocals/cello/guitar), backed up by Eric Harris, Peter Erchick, Will Hart, John Fernandes (all known from the Olivia Tremor Control, plus other projects), and Laura Carter (of Elf Power).
Additional guests count Jeff Mangum, Julian Koster, Scott Spillane, John D'Azzo, Andy Gonzales, which means that almost all bands related to the E-6 family are represented.
Heather has written the 10 tracks (except "By And by", which is based on a theme by J.P. Webster), so this is sort of her solo album I guess.

While D'Azzo pursued interests in California, Spillane and Westbrook (with the help of members of Of Montreal, Elf Power, and Neutral Milk Hotel) finished mixing the album that was completed with Chris Bishop prior to their separation.

Elf Power and Olivia Tremor Control   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Spillane was on crutches, and apparently his appearance was impromptu, since there was no chair set up for him; he staggered to the edge of the stage and managed to blow some triumphant blasts on his trumpet before staggering off again, despite the entreaties of the band.
Elf Power had no stage set for their part of the show, but bits and pieces of Olivia Tremor Control's set could be seen scattered around: a large case decorated like the cover of their new album, "Black Foliage"; the bass drum painted like an abstract ocean under a starry sky.
Scott Spillane, seated in a corner and looking rather like Robert Wyatt with his big beard, contributed soaring trumpet solos and even played the tuba a few times, when he wasn't engaged in intently watching the background films.

Pothole Skinny   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Based out of Jersey City NJ, Pothole Skinny was formulated by Stephen with a purpose to forge a group with a focus on folk song, instrumental compositions, and improvisation.
On Time Shapes The Forest Lake, field recordings join vocals, acoustic and electric guitars and a host of other eclectic instrumentation, from cello to banjo to gong to bowed psaltery, all expertly played by this roving horde of maypole-dancing troubadours.
The group revolves around the nucleus of Stephen Connolly, Scott Freyer and Frank Murphy, three guitarists whose own interplay can at times evoke everything from the Velvet Underground during its primordial Ludlow Street days ("The Ernest Equinox") to the somber, hypnotic prisms of '60S folkies like the Incredible String Band ("Antique Gasoline").

In the meantime, E6 East grew even more, including The Gerbils, which features Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel, Julian Koster's (also of Neutral Milk Hotel) solo project, the Music Tapes, and Elf Power, the members of which run the wildlife preserve/record label (responsible for various E6 reissues) Orange Twin.
The addition of more and more bands led to the collapse of the company; however, Elephant 6 lived on as a collective.
They decided to have a brief reunion tour during the Summer of 2005, during which Julian and Scott were regulars, and Jeff Mangum made two appearances with the band in New York's Bowery Ballroom (after Mangum's more or less hiatus of over five years).

 Neutral Milk Hotel
Not content to rely on the classic verse-chorus-verse song structure, he and bandmates Jeremy Barnes, Scott Spillane and Julian Koster deliver self-described "fuzz-folk," with a montage of repetitive, beautifully warped melodies that invariably hook you, even if not immediately.
Magnum spews stream-of-consciousness lyrics about life, love and death in his warbled, emotive voice, barely leaving himself or the listener room to breathe, conveying anguish one moment and visceral ecstasy the next.
A peculiar range of instruments coexist in their world: the basic trio of guitar, bass and drums are joined by Spillane's marching band horns, Koster's singing saw and a zanzithophone.

Recorded in the France, the album - comprised of vaguely psychedelic, piano-based instrumental compositions - is quite lovely and pastoral in places, and sounds not entirely unlike a Carl Stalling/Raymond Scott cartoon soundtrack filled with chases, sound effects, and crashing finales in others.
Bells and noises and chickens crowing and fires crackling and accordions and myriad other sources create sound collages that place the listener in the middle of a teeming sonic field.
Barnes himself used to be (and might still be) a member of Neutral Milk Hotel, and his bandmates Scott Spillane and Jeff Mangum appear here.

Doss then met up with Scott Spillane and Jeremy Barnes, who later became the Olivia Tremor Control, and the Sunshine Fix moniker was put into hiatus.
Following the dismantling of Olivia Tremor Control in 1999, Doss began recording under the Fix again, releasing a single and preparing an EP, which was released by Kindercore Records in 2000, featuring members of Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, Elf Power, and others.

Rolling Stone : The Milk of Human Kindness: Neutral Milk Hotel
Suddenly, the back door swung open and in walked NMH's Scott Spillane, carrying a rusty old saw, a monstrous trombone, and an ancient washboard-type contraption held together by bits of twine.
"Ahh," Spillane mused softly to himself as he plunked down his cargo, sounding as though he'd lived through this scenario a thousand times.
Works that carry the Elephant 6 stamp -- literally, right there on the back cover -- are typically of the low-fi pop variety, but studio technology is the only primitive thing about them.
