The Bulldog had provision for the installation of four underwing hard-points to which 0.3 in (7.62 mm) machine-guns, unguided or wire-guided air-to-surface projectiles, grenade launchers, bombs up to 110 lb (50 kg) or supply containers up to 640 lb (290 kg) could be fitted.
Scottish Aviation finished the second prototype (G-AXIG, c/n 002), which flew for the first time on February 14, 1971.
Compared to the Bulldog Series 120 the Bullfinch was 1 ft 8 in (50.8 cm) longer, had a 9.3 in (24.6 cm) wider span, and a retractable landing gear.

There have been approximately 300 BAe Scottish Aviation Bulldogs produced since its introduction in 1971 and the first organization to purchase them was the Swedish military, to be used as their basic flight trainer aircraft.
As an American, I'm not very familiar with the BAe Scottish Bulldog, but I'm sure there are many of you (European I presume) that have had some experience with the real thing, often referred to by those that have flown her as the pilot's aircraft!
Accordingly, the PSS Bulldog is an easy flyer, with little or no surprises, and this little aircraft is approved for most aerobatic maneuvers as well.

Scottish Aviation Bulldog N689BD, owned by Tull Morgan of Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, and flown by Scott Weaver and Chris Haven (passenger).
The history of the Bulldog began in the late 1960s, when the Beagle Company, builders of the then-popular, civilian Beagle B.121 Pup trainers, began developing a replacement for the RAFs fleet of aging deHavilland Chipmunks.
Their design, the B.125 Bulldog, was fitted with a more-powerful 200-hp engine; a constant-speed propeller; longer, strengthened wings; and a strengthened fuselage structure.

The Swedish air force purchase 78 Bulldogs to be used as primary trainers starting in 1972.
Since 1986, when as all flying training in the air force started to be done with Saab 105s, they've been used by the air force as liasion aircraft until retirement.
As of 2000 33 Bulldogs are in service there and they will probably change ownership to the school since they've been retired by the air force.

The installation of the RB 53 at some of the Bulldogs was sometimes utilized to train AJ 37 Viggen pilots before using the advanced (and much more expensive) RB 05 attack missile.
As the Bulldog is nose-wheeled, it took several years to solve this problem satisfactory.
The Air Force Bulldogs were initially painted in a dark olive green/dark blue camouflage scheme at the top and in blue-grey at the bottom surfaces.

A Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer of the RAF rests in the Aden desert in the 1960s.
By this time the Scottish Aviation company was equipping the RAF with its single piston engined side-by-side trainer the Bulldog.
In 2006, this is the only flying example of a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer in the world and the reborn "Romeo Sierra" is currently painted back in the "raspberry ripple" colours of the Empire Test Pilots School at Boscombe Down.

As a result of further negotiations with BAE SYSTEMS, Prestwick, in July 2002 technical responsibility for the whole range of Scottish Aviation Bulldog aircraft was also transferred to de Havilland Support Ltd. On 26th July 2002, the Civil Aviation Authority formally assigned the Type Certificate for the Bulldog to the Company.
He has written a number of books on aviation and RAF history and is a regular contributor of articles to a wide variety of magazines and journals.

During a brief ceremony at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, the UK Civil Aviation Authority Type Certificate for the Bulldog was handed over by Nick Sibley, Engineering Director of BAE SYSTEMS Regional Aircraft to Bill Taylor, Chief Executive of de Havilland Support Limited.
A total of 328 Bulldogs of all marks were built and delivered to operators around the world between 1971 and 1982.
In December 2001, BAE SYSTEMS announced the transfer of responsibility for the Beagle Pup to DHSL and the Bulldog decision is a natural progression.
