The Fishing Party were formed to contest the Scottish Parliamentary Election, 2003.
Largely a single-issue party, their formation was prompted by those involved in the fishing industry angry at cuts in the amount of fish they were being allowed to catch as a result of the European Union Single Fisheries Policy.
The Scottish National Party were fearful that this may result in the loss of vital votes for them as traditionally they have won the majority of the votes of those involved in the Scottish fishing industry.

I don't agree with you that the brown trout fishing prior to '92 was "abysmal".
Around the period of "Scum Wednesday" the fishing was crap, but in the previous year the OTFA clocked up a record heat catch in the BandH Scottish finals, with 69 fish weighed in (averaging over the pound)- with one team member disqualified for being late in.
This is where small stillwater fishing for rainbows is the norm and that's the kind of fishing he or she is very good at.

I was perplexed, nay, gob-smacked, that this fish had not stuck, only to discover later that the fly was snarled up in the dropper and was coming in backwards.
I fished it with Ian Muir and Puck Kirkpatrick in June for only the second time in my life and it was perhaps the best fishing I've had all year.

Skippers of Scottish fishing boats have been offered a share of a £25m decommissioning scheme to get out of the industry.
The Scottish Executive announced in March that £25m would be available for the decommissioning of fishing boats in a bid to reduce the size of Scottish fleets and preserve dwindling white fish stocks in the North Sea.
The Fishing Vessels (Decommissioning)(Scotland) Scheme 2001 was eventually laid before parliament on 28 June and MSPs are expected to formally approve it after the summer recess.

Good water levels brought fresh fish into the river and a number of big salmon were seen moving through the town water.
Hugh Fraser was also into a couple of big fish but Lady Luck wasn’t with him this week as both came off, one managing to straighten the hooks on his Rapala.
Once conditions were settled and the river ran clear, 55 fish were caught during the remainder of the week.

The SNP have shown themselves in the Scottish Parliament to be immature, opportunistic, and more concerned with soundbites than action.
The second one, fishing, is something about which I know very little and care even less.
