Scottish football league system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scottish football league system (or pyramid) is a series of interconnected leagues for Scottish Association football clubs..
It is not as well developed as most other football league systems, consisting of only two leagues made up of just four divisions.
Leagues do exist outside the pyramid (most notably the Highland Football League), but there is no regular promotion or relegation between them and the pyramid.

Their position as the principal Catholic football club in the country was usurped in 1888 by the growth of Celtic.
Although they did reach the Scottish Cup final in 2001 losing to Celtic, it has been 103 years since they lifted the famous trophy and they also reached the League Cup final in 2004 losing to Livingston.
Hibernian's most recent relegation to the First Division came at the end of the 1997-98 season, as a result of a 2-1 home defeat to Dundee United on May 2, 1998.

When the war ended the Scottish League resisted attempts to reform it, but were forced to re-introduce it in 1921, along with automatic promotion and relegation, when the clubs which had been left out formed their own rival league and poached players from the Scottish League.
Division Two was called 'B' Division from when the League restarted in 1946 until 1956.

 Football League
The new set-up was not called the English League as initially it hoped it too would include Scottish clubs, but these later (1890) formed their own league instead.
A second division was added by absorbing the rival Football Alliance in 1892, and by 1899 it had 36 member clubs.
In 2004 the Football League decided to call its top division 'the Football League Championship' (which presumably they thought sounded better than the 'Premiership wannabes league'), thus 'elevating' the old Division 2 and 3 to 'new' Leagues 1 and 2.
