The league was formed in the 1890s to provide the growing number of football clubs in the country with a more consistent fixture list.
The league proved to be highly successful, and in 1893 a Second Division was formed by the inclusion of a number of clubs previously in the Scottish Football Alliance.
Scottish club Gretna, who had previously played in the English UniBond League, were admitted in 2002 to replace the defunct Airdrieonians.

Fife sides in general found the League Cup to be an exciting competition with both Raith Rovers and Dunfermline reaching the Final in the early years and Cowdenbeath's record attendance is for a League Cup tie against Rangers.
The end of this era saw some of the finest football ever played in the competition as Rangers and Aberdeen faced each other for three seasons running, Rangers winning on penalties after a 3-3 draw, winning again, this time 3-2 before the Dons claimed revenge in 1989-90 with a 2-1 win in extra time.

History: Celtic Football Club was formally constituted at a meeting in St. Mary's church hall in East Rose Street (now Forbes Street), Calton, Glasgow, by Marist Brother Walfrid on November 6, 1887 with the purpose stated in the official club records as "being to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes".
They were founder members of the Scottish Football Association in 1873 and were one of the biggest clubs in the country around this period.
They joined the league in 1900, but have rested in lower regions of the league for most of their existence, although they won the Second Division in season 1931-32, and Division C in 1947-48.

The League Cup has been much-criticised in the past from within Ibrox as a tournament of little value but it was interesting to see just how highly prized it was by both Rangers management and support when winning it ended their two year trophy drought.
In other words the lower league teams have triumphed twice as often as the SPL clubs when teams from the two divisions have met.
In addition, the 3rd Division claimed a win and two draws against the SPL while the 2nd mustered three wins and a draw.

Scottish Division Two is the second highest division of the Scottish Football League and the third highest in the Scottish football league system.
Prior to season 2005-6, the top two teams were promoted to Division One and the bottom two were relegated to Division Three.
The teams which are placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th enter into a play-off with the team which is 9th in the First Division, and the team which is placed 9th enters into a similar play-off with the teams which are placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Third Division.

In 1955 'C' Division was abandoned when it became apparent that several teams who were unhappy with the existing format intended to withdraw their Reserve teams.
