Formerly the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group, Outright Scotland is the umbrella organisation for a number of Focus Groups - one of which, Pride Focus, has so successfully managed the bi-positive Pride Scotland that it has become an independent plc.
The Bisexual Focus Group aims to be a loud and challenging voice throughout Scotland.
And from their Scottish base, they promise to move on into the North of England and beyond : "we're concerned about the community, not national boundaries." Campaigning, networking, and visibility all lie ahead.

The first meeting of the Scottish Minorities Group took place in Jan 1969 in the drawing room of Ian Dunn's parents house in Glasgow, and consisted of only 6 people.
The group was officially founded on 9 May 1969 as a self-help organisation working for the rights of homosexual men and women which aimed to provide counselling, work for law reform and provide meeting places for lesbians and gay men.
In 1978 SMG changed its name to the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group, and the name of the newsletter was changed to Gay Scotland.

In 1978 the Gay Research Group of the British Sociological Association discussed the development of gay archives, but it was the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) which identified the need for a media monitoring service to collect evidence of discrimination and police arrests from all parts of the United Kingdom.
Around this time an early homosexual rights group, the Albany Trust, donated its extensive archives and press cuttings to us, and the NCCL provided essential meeting and working space in Southwark, with financial assistance from a charitable trust, the Lyndhurst Settlement.

Lesbian and gay couples in Scotland could be on the brink of receiving adoption rights, after the Scottish Executive announced it is to review existing legislation.
The changes will bring Scottish law in line with the recently changed adoption laws for same-sex couples in England and Wales, but it has already caused controversy amongst religious groups north of the border.
It said that the report is looking to refresh the adoption laws, first introduced in the 1970s, and could be in ministers by the end of the year.

One of the senior activists in Edinburgh's gay liberation movement was Ian Christie, a WWII veteran: every year he'd attend the memorial ceremony and lay a wreath of red poppies with pink triangles in memory of the lesbians and gays killed - the queer soldiers that the military had always pretended weren't there.
After he died the organisation he belonged to, Scottish Homosexual Rights Group, kept up the tradition for a while, but it was tricky, because there were no other military veterans: plenty of ex-soldiers, but they'd all been dishonorably discharged for being gay.
Caroline is certainly right that the Edwardian era was hardly the paradise that nostalgia makes it out to be.
