Scottish independence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scottish independence is advocated by the political movement of Scottish people that desires that Scotland secede from the United Kingdom and once again become a sovereign independent state as it was prior to 1707.
Demands for Scottish independence are based on the idea that Scotland, as a nation with her own strong identifiable culture, separate legal, banking and education system from that of England, ought ultimately to secede from the United Kingdom and revert to the independent status it had before 1707.
Scottish independence is currently supported most notably by the Scottish National Party, the Scottish Green Party, Solidarity (Scotland), and the Scottish Socialist Party; as well as Margo MacDonald (a former SNP member) and other independent members of the Scottish parliament.

We however would rather take the view that our position is a radical one capable of seeing and appreciating Scottish issues and problems in their Scottish context and seek to apply appropriate solutions rather than until hitherto having them imposed by fiat or coercion from elsewhere.
As a new party, we seek to address some of the current issues, and welcome the approaching date in May 2007 when electors will have an opportunity to show their feelings by voting in ways most likely to advance the cause of Scotland's resumption of sovereignty.
On looking around the Scottish political scene today we see little or nothing to motivate the voters, and plenty to demotivate them as is clearly evident in the low turnout of only 49% at the last Holyrood election.

Moviegoers remember Mel Gibson' epic portrayal of legendary Scottish freedom-fighter Sir William Wallace, valiantly leading his nation to independence in the early 1300s in "Braveheart." Today, using the ballot box instead of a sword, a new leader named Alex Salmond is determined once again to win self-determination for the Scots.
It also means that minority parties in the Scottish contest -- like the conservatives, who are a very small party in Scotland -- are still represented in the Scottish Parliament -- although they are not represented at all from Scotland in the House of Commons in London.
And there are some people in the Labor Party who, I suspect, in a situation where Scotland was moving toward independence, would move out of their shells and probably come out as independence supporters.
