JUNIOR football has its annual day in the television spotlight tomorrow, when Auchinleck Talbot and Bathgate Thistle go head-to-head in the OVD Scottish Junior Cup final, at Kilmarnock's Rugby Park.
The case for a Scottish "pyramid" is growing more compelling by the season and if these two attack-minded sides can put on an entertaining show, that case would be even harder to ignore.
tom, the highland league is an ok league, however some of the local derbies in the junior leagues can pull a big crowd (i once went to see auchinleck talbot play the mighty glenafton, where the crowd was in the region of 4,500).

The Scottish Junior Cup, is a competition organised by the Scottish Junior Football Association.
The cup is extremely venerable having been competed for since the 1886-87 season, when Fairfield Govan became the first winners of the competition.
The cup's long term sponsor, the OVD Demerara Rum company, who, as of 2006, had an eighteen year-long association with the competition withdrew their backing before the start of the 2006-07 competition.

The Ayrshire Junior Football Association was formed in 1889 but there was no junior team from Kilbirnie until 1901 when Ladeside came into existence, probably filling the gap after the demise of the senior club.
In the Scottish Junior Cup they came close to success during this period with two appearances in the last sixteen (6th Round) in seasons 1906/07 and 1907/08.
In season 1923/24 they recovered and were again crowned Ayrshire Junior Challenge Champions.In 1927 there was a split within the SJFA and the Western Junior League was dissolved and a breakaway movement of 18 Ayrshire Junior Clubs of which Kilbirnie was one formed a new league.

Junior football in Tayport was relatively short lived and ended with the outbreak of hostilities in 1914.
Junior football in the town wasn't resurrected until 1990 when the present Tayport FC, was admitted to membership of the Scottish Junior FA in time for the 1990/91 season.
It is a period during which the club has become the area's, indeed the country's, most successful junior club dominating Tayside Junior football in unprecedented fashion, winning every competition open to them including the OVD Scottish Junior Cup in 1996.

Petershill Athletic and Junior Football Club have been the Scottish junior football representatives of the Springburn and Townhead areas of Glasgow for over a century.
In 1935 the club moved to Petershill Park, for which all the work of laying the pitch, erecting terracing, pavilion and dressing rooms was performed by local volunteers.

It was in 1904 that Cambuslang joined the Glasgow Junior League and also moved to a new ground at Somervell Park on a rental basis, the site was the property of Somervells, originally from Ayrshire.
Cambuslang earned the title of "Junior Side of the Century" in the eyes of a lot of Scottish Newspapers, after they retained the Scottish Junior Cup in1971-72 with a 3-2 victory over Bonnyrigg Rose in the replay at Hampden after the two sides had earlier drew 1-1.
Although Cambuslang reached the Final of the Scottish Cup for the third year in succession in 1972-73, their chance of creating history was thwarted at the hands of Irvine Meadow.

The lack of unity between the senior non-league and Junior structures is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the creation of a pyramid system similar to that in England which would allow ambitious clubs the opportunity to gain League membership on merit.
This would allow for greater opportunities for advancement to be introduced if the play-offs proved a success or a reversion to the status quo ante in the (unlikely) event of promoted clubs failing to hold their own.
There's a suggestion that the Junior Cup may be heading the same way as senior competitions with the tournament being dominated by the 'big' clubs.

But the junior game remains in a healthy state, according to Linlithgow secretary David Roy, who is in his 43rd year as an office-bearer of his club; he was made MBE in 1999 for his services.
