Much of the output of BBC Scotland Television, such as most news, current affairs and sport programmes, and the Glasgow-based soap opera, River City, are intended for broadcast within Scotland, whilst others, for example many drama and comedy programmes, aim at audiences throughout the United Kingdom and worldwide markets.
Although they previously had independent existences, Scottish TV (serving the Central Lowlands) and Grampian (serving the Highlands and Islands) now belong to the same company (SMG plc) and resemble each other closely, apart from local news coverage.

GRANADA's purchase of 19pc of Scottish Media Group ran into turbulence yesterday when Alex Salmond, Scottish Nationalist leader, said he would ask the Prime Minister to give a government view on the matter "before the Scottish elections".
Mr Salmond, whose party is just ahead of Labour in Scottish opinion polls, said there was cross-party concern about the loss of quoted company headquarters in Scotland, particularly in sensitive areas such as media and clearing banks.
