May, 1999 saw an influx of Kosovan refugees to Scotland, as a result of a resettlement agreement with the UNHCR and Scottish Refugee Council was at the forefront in helping Kosovans settle and integrate in Scottish society.
Scottish Refugee Council offers advice and advocacy to asylum seekers, and is also concerned with issues of settlement and integration for those who have made Scotland their home and can never return to their former countries.
Scottish Refugee Council also plays a part in community development, supporting refugee community organisations in Scotland, helping refugees tell their stories to the media, and involving them in policy discussions with politicians and service providers.

The Scottish Refugee Council is a national agency providing advice, information and assistance to asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland; promoting a strategic response to refugee needs and campaigning to ensure Scotland plays a role in meeting the UK's legal and humanitarian obligations under the 1951 United Nations Convention on Refugees.
The Scottish Refugee Council condemns the trafficking of people into UK, but recognises that it occurs partly because of the inconsistencies of EU asylum policies and the increased controls and deterrence measures used to prevent asylum seekers travelling to the UK in any legitimate way.
However, the Scottish Refugee Council is concerned that the cards may be used inappropriately to assess rights to essential services at the point of need and, although the Paper states that asylum seekers will not be required to carry them at all times, in reality they may be used to increase stop and search.

Twelve men from Kosovo are being looked after by the Scottish Refugee Council after they were found in a lorry trailer in Glasgow.
A Home Office spokesman said the men would have to report to the immigration office at a later date when their case for asylum would be considered.
