The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is a far left wing party which campaigns for a socialist economic platform and Scottish independence.
Major disagreement has surrounded the party policy of independence for Scotland, a central policy of the SRSP when it was active, largely accepted by Scottish Miltiant Labour, but opposed by the SWP on internationalist grounds.
Delegates to the SSP conference voted on February 13, 2005 and Fox was elected with 252 votes to McCombes' 154; 9 delegates abstained and 1 ballot paper was spoilt.

The Scottish Republican Socialist Party (SRSP) was a political party operating in Scotland.
They were formed out of the Scottish Republican Socialist Clubs, formed in 1973 to introduce socialism to the Scottish National Party (SNP) and grow support for Scottish independence amongst left-wingers who supported the retention of the union with the rest of the United Kingdom.
In 1998, the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) was formed and the SRSP narrowly decided to join them, and reformed as a cross party movement called the Scottish Republican Socialist Movement.

In what might be seen as an example of rapprochement in Scotland, there were supporters from Socialist Outlook, the Revolutionary Democratic Group, the Communist Tendency, and the Scottish Republican Socialist Party, as well as a number of independent socialists and communists participating in the debates.
Republican communists are those who take seriously the question of republicanism, and see it as an immediate political struggle on the road to communism.
The purpose of this was to unite all republicans in the SSP, regardless of whether they were communists, to campaign for militant republicanism and strengthening democracy within the new party.

Alan McCombes, in the name of SML, publicly launched the idea of an electoral bloc, a Socialist Alliance, to contest the first elections for the Scottish Parliament, a perspective which was gaining credence given the universally expected victory of the LP in the next legislative elections.
The idea of a Socialist Alliance was making some headway, though with reservations in the SSM where a section of its supporters remained in the Labour Party and even more so in the Liberation current, which was entirely integrated into the SNP.

In January 1999 the SRSP took the decision to affiliate to the newly formed Scottish Socialist Party, conditionally on account of their support for a Scottish Socialist Republic.
Scottish Republican Socialists have consistently worked for the maximum unity of the anti-imperialist forces in Scotland and have worked with others who share the same goal.
When the previous Scottish Socialist Party was formed in the late 1980s we declared that, "there is no room for the '57 varieties' of socialist organisations fighting each other for Scottish independence." Unfortunately that organisation did not stand the test of time.
