Single malt Scotch whisky is malt whisky that is distilled entirely at a single distillery, and is not blended with grain whisky.

Nowadays the preferred adjective is Scottish, and Scotch usually means Scotch whisky.
It more or less replaced Scottish as the prevailing term in England, perhaps because in some Lallans (Scots language) accents the word Scottish is pronounced with a glottal stop replacing the "tt" in a way that could be heard as Scotch to English ears.
From the early 19th century Scots or Scottish were the preferred usages among educated Scottish people, Scotch being regarded as an anglicized affectation.

Blended whiskies became popular later in the century, and in 1909 a Royal Commission allowed grain spirit to be described as whisky.
Indeed, assuming a whisky has about 70% of alcohol when it leaves the spirit still, and loses about 1% of alcohol a year a 30 years old whisky would just have a percentage of 40%, which is the lowest limit for a whisky.

Historians agree that whisky production, albeit on a small scale actually began in Ireland somewhere around or before the twelfth century and was brought across to Scotland somewhat later.
