 Historians and the Scottish-American Connection
When Scottish women formed their own ethnic organization, the Daughters of Scotia, in 1898, they reflected the same concerns that animated the national Daughters of the American Revolution (formed in 1890) and the regional United Daughters of the Confederacy (formed in 1894).
Scottish migration to the British North American Colonies during the seventeenth century remained sporadic, but from the early eighteenth century forward, extended bands of Highland and Lowland Scots settled all through Nova Scotia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.
They moved west as "Americans." Since the infamous Highland Clearances of the nineteenth century sent immigration primarily to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the American aspect of the Scottish story simply stops.

Highland Heritage: Scottish Americans in the American South, by Celeste Ray. Introduction.
In my initial forays to Scottish events, I was intrigued by the way in which Scottish Americans from across the country, of Highland, Lowland, and Scots-Irish ancestry alike, celebrate their ethnic identity with the imagery and material culture of Highland Scots.
Likewise, Americans of northern European descent are lumped together as "white"--seeming to lack any ethnicity--yet Scottish Americans and Irish Americans explicitly make clear that they are not Anglo-Saxons.
The following account of Scottish Americans focuses on Americans of European descent who actively celebrate their ethnic awareness.

 Scottish-American Gravestones, 1700-1900 : Genealogical Publishing Company
When one considers that a number of these gravestone inscriptions contain references to family members who died abroad, as well as those who died in Scotland, Scottish gravestones take on even more importance for North Americans.
These facts have not been lost on the indefatigable Scottish researcher, David Dobson, who, drawing upon both published and unpublished sources, has compiled this new volume of death records, Scottish-American Gravestones, 1700-1900.
After that date, Scottish law mandated the systematic recording of births, marriages, and deaths throughout the nation, while prior to 1855 Scottish parish registers tended to focus on baptismal and marriage entries, to the virtual exclusion of death records.

Scottish-American Court Records, 1733-1783 : Genealogical Publishing Company
The political union of Scotland and England in 1707 led to a rapid expansion of Scottish economic links with the American colonies, especially on the Chesapeake, where in the years prior to the Revolution the tobacco trade was controlled by Glasgow-based merchants and their factors.
Evidence of this economic expansion and the subsequent settlement of Scots in America exists in a wide range of documentary sources in Scotland, including the records of the Scottish court system which have been deposited in the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh.
This present work is a digest of such evidence and is based on the minute books of the Court of Session (the highest civil court) and those of the High Court of the Admiralty (which had jurisdiction in all seafaring and maritime cases) for the period 1733-1783.
