William Scott "Scotty" Bowman (born September 18, 1933 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a former National Hockey League head coach, considered among the greatest coaches in NHL history.
Bowman became the league's most successful coach over his 30 years of coaching with 1,244 wins in the regular season and 223 in the playoffs.
Bowman was thrust back into the head coaching duties in the Fall of 1991, after the untimely death of Bob Johnson, who had just won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins the previous season.

In 1961, Scotty Bowman was given the position of chief scout of amateur talent in the east, then in 1963, briefly coached the Omaha Knights of the Central Hockey League, scouted for the Junior Canadiens and finished the season coaching the junior NDG Monarchs.
Scotty Bowman, although a burgeoning star in the Montreal Canadiens' system, was one of those given an opportunity through the league's expansion.
Scotty Bowman was selected as an Honoured Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991, but leaves a legacy that will remain as long as the game of hockey is played.

Born William Scott Bowman in Montreal during the Great Depression, Bowman was the son of Scottish immigrants in a family with two brothers and one sister.
